Dejan Lovren has today signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool Football Club.

The centre-back put pen to paper on the deal at Melwood on Friday morning to commit his future to the Reds.

Lovren is approaching the end of his third season with the club, having signed from Southampton in July 2014. He has since clocked up 105 appearances in all competitions, scoring four goals.

Moments after inking the new contract, he told Liverpoolfc.com: “I think this is one special day for me and my family.

“I think I am the happiest guy [in the world] today, it’s another dream come true. It was always my dream to stay as long as possible at one club that I love – and that is Liverpool.

“After all that happened in the beginning, in the last two seasons I think I’ve done better than in the first season. The club has rewarded me, they believed in me and also the fans, and this is what I respect a lot after everything that happened.

“I am pleased with everything and I just want to stay here as long as possible and be a part of this family for many, many years to come.”

Lovren has made 28 appearances for Liverpool so far in 2016-17, helping himself to two goals.

The 27-year-old has forged a strong understanding with summer signing Joel Matip, with the Reds suffering just one defeat in 15 games when they’ve played alongside each other, helping maintain the push for a top-four finish.

Lovren added: “I am glad I will be a part of this team and this plan for the future. We are a really talented team with many special players, an amazing manager, the club is fantastic [and] the supporters are always behind us even on the bad days, which is the most important thing. I am definitely excited about the future.”

Not the greatest time to announce it, after Sunday's performance.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

Great news for squad depth. Now go sign sign Van Dyk and maybe another CB as Matip is made ****e.

Wouldn't go so far to call it great news tbh, OK I guess, but I wouldn't lose any sleep if we sold him.
                  * The above is posted in my opinion. Feel free to disagree.

I think most contract renewals these days are purely about preserving investment. Just making sure he can't run down his contract. I don't think it necessitates him being a first teamer next season. 100k a week for Lovren though

Was about to say it doesn't bode well for Can that the club are stalling on a 70k contract, but happy to sanction £100k for Lovren. (If figures are accurate)

The colour of the shirt looked a bit Man Utd when i first saw it until I realised that they stole the colour from us and that our old kits always seemed a deeper shade of red. Now I've seen it again on Lovren it's reminding me of Jimmy Case, Terry McDermott and Ray Kennedy

A lot of money for someone who should be a backup.

Glad he's staying, we need to build the squad not lose players who play but we seem to be getting reckless with wages again. He won't even be in the team if we get Dijk or someone else and I don't believe anyone in the world would pay him that much so the threat of losing him to bigger money is hardly high. The wages from the last accounts were pretty concerning given we have no squad to show for it. Hopefully the next set paint a better picture.

I mean this is the measured, sensible mentality to have when you read that a long term first team squad member wants to stay and has been secured for the next few years, but my inner monkey is flinging excrement at the wall that this at best average player (breathing techniques there) is going to be a fixture of the squad for the foreseeable future and will be earning £100k a week.

I hope he's relegated to squad member by better signings, but that's a lot of money (and time) for someone that error prone. I don't think we'll ever truly challenge with him and Mignolet as first team regulars.
