I think it's a lack of understanding of the situation and a reason he will never be a top defender. This is my view on it which I posted in the match thread

he knows balls gone over his head and he's got out of position, and something just clicks - quick, get back, rush of blood, decision making out the window, act rashly, get to close and down he goes, penalty. when you watch it you can almost see the moment his brain switches to rash mode.

I think we all agree it was not a pen when you see it a few times, But the ref had one view of it and got suckered in by it.

The crux of the matter is that a lot of us think Lovren does not know how to defend when decisions our critical to the game.

If he jockeyed the player to the byline what could of happened , maybe get a corner, they pass the ball backwards but not a penalty
