It probably helped that he only had to play one position as well. But he looked very good yesterday and hopefully it will continue.

He was class… the only negative point was the closest city came to scoring was when he gave haaland that free header. If he had buried that, he prob wouldn’t be getting the same praise.
IMO, man of the match could have gone to Gomez, van dijk, Allison or Salah. All were unreal. But I’m happy it went to Gomez, feel like he’d get more from it than the others. I hope he keeps his place until he loses it now.
You also have to wonder is it a coincidence that van dijk’s best game of the season was when he was partnered with Gomez…I don't tip

The injury he got was a career threatening one - I remember listening to a pod at the time that it would be two seasons (if at all) before he hit back to his level. Him and VVD were absolutely imperious when we won the league and there was an argument that Joe played better
All that said he is making shocking errors right now - if we could get 30/40m for him you’d be v tempted to sell him and reinvest

Who is paying that for him in current form and injury history?Originally posted by Irishnev View PostThe injury he got was a career threatening one - I remember listening to a pod at the time that it would be two seasons (if at all) before he hit back to his level. When we won the leave we had the most effective press in world football, front to back. If people were scoring it was because they somehow managed to break the lines and counter attack. Perfect situation for a defender with pace like Gomez. His deficiencies are far more exposed now that we’re disfunction as a team, but his limitations are not new.Trey Nyoni: countdown to stardom-2 years1year0.5 years

Read an article on the BBC website, Martin Keown was talking about his similar injury, he said he only had a partial rupture of the patella tendon and it took him at least 2 years to get back to his best whereas Joe had a full rupture so I'm guessing it will take him that bit longer.Originally posted by Irishnev View PostThe injury he got was a career threatening one - I remember listening to a pod at the time that it would be two seasons (if at all) before he hit back to his level. Gomez seems to have two modes at present - playing really well or having mares. I'm a big fan of the guy but there seems to be no middle ground with him at present.
He is not hiding in games when he is platying badly though and not lacking in effort so will give him that unlike TAA who is pretty much stinking it up in every game save for two or three games in all comps this season (Bournemouth, and Rangers).
Robertson is also very very mixed in terms of his form both pre and post injury.
VVD is sort of the elephant in the room though. He is getting some criticism but he is having games in which the only reason he is not costing goals or goal chances the way Gomez does in some games is down to others bailing him out.
So far this season the only players in our back line that have looked consistent (and in some cases this may be down to minutes played) are Alisson, Matip and Konate. The other four have all dropped off to varying degrees imo.
Gomez - Feast or famine. No middle ground.
TAA - Off the pace almost every game now.
Robertson - Erratic form and nowhere close to his best.
VVD - Good to average most games but that easily world class level seem beyond him.I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.
