    Time to move on.....

    Comment

I think it's even more painful that minus the Karius mistakes last night was the best defensive performance I can remember from us in a long time.

The lads ****ed now, you don't come back from that unfortunately. Which is a shame with his uptake in form in recent weeks. That first mistake definately contributed to the second. He will have been so focused on not ****ing up again that he did.

That was last summer unfortunately. Hopefully we won't make the same mistake for yet another window.

Opening minute of the game why are you looking to quickly release the ball to a centre back?
Ah right, yeah I agree with you then.

To sum up Karius blunder, my missus, who has no interest in football came into the room (was allowed in) at full time, saw the mistakes and asked, “why did he do that”?

            I had no answer.

Because there is only one answer.

            It’s because he is ****.

He has been hiding in plain sight for 6 months, he just chose the mother of all occasions to remind us.

It's not just last night for Karius in the CL either, there's the throw to VVD against City that led to a goal and the own goal when he kicked the ball striaght at Millie. Some bad luck but some appalling goal keeping to.

I've defended him being our number one recently because we were looking better as a defensive unit. He was just getting more protection I guess. Last night he padded back in to dangerous areas and we got away with it a number of times. He just looked like he was playing to his limit and didn't look comfortable

Can never decide if Oblak is a genuine world class keeper or "just" a very good one.

Wrote this in here about six months ago and am still in the same place regarding Oblak.

The one area I feel Oblak is weak is his distribution. But his shot stopping, command of his area, anticipation etc all look top drawer, and he is the sort of keeper that can have nothing to do for most of a game and then come to life when he is needed.

He also has a nice habit of making the sort of saves from goal attempts that looked nailed on.

The one slight doubt I have about Oblak is that he, since moving to Spain, has always played behind a very good and very well drilled backline that in turn had a very well drilled midfield in front of it. So if he does have flaws that would mark him down to being "only" a very good keeper instead of a world class one, then they might only show when he is playing behind a more open team.

Since then I have seen nothing of Oblak to make up my mind on him other than his distribution is still floating between average and poor.

His team play much deeper than we do and they tend to defend in lines so he does not have to come out quickly to get a ball (and he rarely does come out to intercept balls), and he does not release the ball quickly on a very regular basis.

But how much of that is him and how much is down to how the team is set up and plays is up in the air for me.

What does stand out about him a hell of a lot for me (other than his excellent shot stopping, reflexes etc) is his concentration. He can go long spells of a game with very little to do and then come to life in a flash to make a reflex save that a keeper who had switched off even a tiny bit could not have made.

Is he better than Karius? He is so much better imo that it is not worth comparing their respective qualities, but my doubts about how he would do playing behind a more open team linger.

Think that is why I lean towards Alisson as he has shown he can do the shot stopping and the bread and butter stuff along with being very quick off his line when he needs to intercept the ball, and he is pretty damn good in terms of distribution. Also the fact he plays in a team that does push up shows me that he can thrive in a system somewhat similar to our own.

In terms of a more short term (and cheaper) fix my choice would still be Ralf Fahrmann. Probably has 3 or 4 years at the top level left in him but he is that old school style of keeper. Big, physical, commanding at the back, strong in the air and great at shot stopping. Very good organiser and thrives regardless of whether there are strong or passive personalities in the backline in front of him. Him as number 1 with Karius as his understudy could work.

Of course if Karius is deemed a lost cause by Klopp over the summer, then any of the above three names along with a quality young understudy ( someone like Lafont maybe) would be lovely

He's a weak link, we must be ruthless now and weed out the small handful of players who are just not up to it or you worry about in big games, he's top of the list. I'm sorry but that was just unforgivable, worst defeat for me, I can remember, absolutely gutted.

We all make mistakes and he should be forgiven but I know the next final we are in no-one will want him in goal.

In terms of mistakes, the manager has to take the blame for not bringing in a decent keeper. Also needs to take the blame for not subbing Karius after the first mistake. It's all very well Klopp acknowledging that Karius was mentally gone before he made the second mistake but he should have know that and subbed him after the first goal

I also think we should leave him alone now and move on. Mistakes happen and all we can do is hope we don't make them again. Debating about whether he is good enough or not will not bring the cup back.
                          Are we winning?

Is there really a debate any more?

Not sure I understand all this. Unless he's on the forum or we're tweeting him then we are leaving him alone.

Mistakes do happen but 'we' didn't make them (the team), one person did.

And yes, there's no debate as to his quality, he isn't of sufficient quality for a team capable of winning the CL.

He is obviously a good keeper, but lets be brutally honest now, his Liverpool career has not been ideal. Stop start, stop start, got badly injured right a that beginning. Then did not look like the same keeper, given his chance made some absolute howlers, given another chance due to our other keeper being all over the shop and played himself into some form but again he rode his luck in his last few games especially in the Champions League, then when it really matters, **** up does not quite do it justice , absolutely sickening performance, no keeper should not be able to simply throw the ball out and to get beat from that far out by a ball that is straight down his throat is criminal. Nice guy, we all have bad games etc ... But bye, both of them, its Skitel Time
