Not winning the thing I think is fine tbh, Modric had a cracking season coupled with the WC but to be nominated for the player of the year and then not to make the team of the year is bonkers much like Courtois winning GK of the year and then not making the team.

Sort of undermines the selection process.

The whole thing was a shambles, I watched about ten minutes it was on SKY1.

At the end when the best player thing was announced, Elba gave the intro "a man who needs no introduction" at which point a bald guy I have never before seen in my life (apparently the main guy at FIFA) walked on stage with an envelope. The highlights thing played with Mo, Ronaldo and Modric. The camera went back to the bald guy who turned to Idris and said "what do I do now", before being told to open the envelope.

Fat original (moustachioed) Ronaldo looked like he was having a blast.

It is just FIFA trying to steal attention from the Balon D'or.

was talking to a Madrid fan this morning about this and he agreed with me tjat Modric did had a poor season by his standards for Madrid last year, sure Barca had the league wrapped up by Christmas and Madrid put all their eggs into the champs league.

Modric was top class in the World Cup though but Salah was clearly the best player in Europe last season. The fact we didn't win anything and that he plays for Egypt (who are pretty ****) swayed it. Salah getting the best goal was a token gesture, IMO Bale should have got it.

That French World Cup goal was pretty ****ing good too. That said, Salah's goal was special.

If we won the CL and Egypt got out the groups Salah would have won. Ronaldo had it until Croatia got the final. It's an awkward halfway house between the individual performance and their teams results

defo mate, a good world cup/euros can make a huge difference to who wins these awards. Modric tbf was pretty daman good for most of the season and I thought he was exceptional at the world cup.

Still cant figure out the thinking behind that team of the year though.
