Of course it’s a straw man. Nobody has questioned his quality. Nobody thinks he’s not one of the club’s, and the league's, greatest ever players. None of that is relevant to whether he is or isn’t in good form, being overplayed, or whether he is or isn’t conceding possession to easily this season, etc etc. It’s a text book bad faith straw man argument.

As for the assist he merely gave Elliott the ball. Assists should be chances created. A cross, a threaded through ball. Not just aimed at Mo, I just think it makes bull**** of the stats. If someone passed the ball to someone and that player dribbled around 8 players and slotted in does it still count as an assist even though it had no influence on the goal?

I don’t see the issue. If you pass the ball to a player and the next thing that player does is score a goal it’s an assist. If the player deflects the ball off a defender or any other interruption no assist. What are the alternatives? You’d then need a panel to judge how meaningful a pass it was in the assist and then whether or not it was good enough to count? Then we’d all moan like **** about that.

As with everything in sport you don’t get lucky that often. Salah gets a lot of assists.

The only issue is how you judge the significance of assist numbers. If you look at the Nunez thread, they’re considered as good as goals. As it happens, I think they’re not a very useful metric for attacking players, they’re always going to be around the buildup or finishing of goals. For wingbacks or creative CM players they are probably more enlightening.

I think the problem is that he still makes telling contributions in the box at an elite level, but out wide the best he can manage outside is often to lay it back as he doesnt have any pace left. I think we should seriously think about moving him in the middle, and utilising Nunez wide.

And as to selling him... it depends on the availability of a replacement, but if we get offered 100m in the summer (for a 32 year old) or lose him for nothing the following year, what should we do. I dont think he is effective on his current position.

All our players already have that handicap with Nunez in the team.
