I get that there are improvements year on year in Klopp's first 2 years but what are everyone's expectations for this season?

I believe that if we had improved the defence / defensive side of the team we could have been challenging for the title, having not done that I feel that what we achieved last year is the best we can really expect league-wise. The CL gives us extra work and is a bit of a distraction from our league campaign (not saying that's a bad thing, but more games does make it a little more difficult). But the league position is what we will ultimately be judged on, and being this early in the season and feeling that we can't better last season in that regard is a major source of frustration for me.

That said I think we really could do with winning a trophy to take the pressure off everyone at the club
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Personally, while I always like to think we can win the league if everything falls right, I thought that this year would be about learning to cope with two games a week and competing on all fronts after the luxury (ha!) of not being in Europe last year. A decent season would be to consolidate our league position, get to the knockout stages of the Champions League, and have a decent run in one of the other two cups (which I'd count as semis or better). A **** season would be no trophies and no top-four.

I share the frustration of not improving the defence. I thought we needed a LB, CB, CM and pacy winger to be fighting for the title. We got two out of four, with a third to come next year, but the one we missed was the one we most desperately needed. I also don't buy this idea that there's only one player in world football that can improve us. That's a sad indictment on our scouting.

I just think that taken in context of our overall improvement, all this "not sure Klopp's the man to take us forward any more" ****e that I'm hearing since Burnley is ridiculous. I'm not arguing that everything in the garden is rosy, just that it's a lot rosier than it was before he took over and I still think he's the man who can get us there if he's backed.

I agree with all that, I am not questioning Klopp. My concern is that last season we got into the top 4 by the skin of our teeth, we need to be in the CL to attract the top players, and we need top players to push on to the next level. The CL puts additional demands on the squad making it more difficult to match last season and at the moment it feels that some of the sides around us have improved while we still have the same issues we have had for the last couple of years. It feels already like we aren't going to improve on last year and missing out on CL would be a disaster. I know it is way too early to talk like that but it looks like some of the teams who finished around us are better than last year while we haven't learned from our mistakes.

I think Sturridge is talented but he's now so slow that his technical ability is rarely effective

It's sad to see the state he's in

We switched off more than once. They could have easily scored from two successive corners where they had free headers and there was more

Attacking wise we should have won but we gift chances and goals like we do every game

There is no getting away from this even someone with such an educated view as you have can see this

Daniel Sturridge was one of the weekend’s top sprinting strikers as the Liverpool man attempts to get back his mojo.

Sturridge, 28, played his first full 90 minutes since January, when he appeared in the League Cup semi-final win over Southampton. In fact the England striker did not play a full 90 minutes in the Premier League all last season, so completing the 1-1 draw against Burnley was somewhat of a landmark.

Sturridge’s start to the season has again been a slow one after he picked up a thigh niggle in the Audi Cup which ruled him out of the games against Watford and first leg against Hoffenheim.

But, despite not being as effective as the Sturridge of old against Burnley, he at least looked mobile and completed 53 sprints and only James Milner ran more than his 6.6miles.

The Daily Mail wrote: “Daniel Sturridge is reaping the rewards for putting himself through his own ‘pre-pre-season’ when he spent his holidays working in the gym. Only midfielder James Milner ran more than his 6.6 miles while he was also among the top strikers this weekend for the number of sprints made (53)”

Sturridge, who looked set to leave Liverpool in the summer, has been accused of losing his pace and although the speed of his sprinting was not measured, his frequency looks impressive.

Sturridge has made four appearances this term, scoring once, but he looks unlikely to be a regular fixture in attack for the Reds with Jurgen Klopp’s first-choice front three being Roberto Firmino Sadio Mane and Mo Salah.

Daily Mirror claimed yesterday that Klopp had told the striker he is very much playing for his future at Anfield, with the German thought to be unconvinced about whether he can rely on the forward to be a regular source of goals.

The former Chelsea man has two years left on his current deal, but the Reds are yet to open new deal talks with the player and plan to make a decision on Sturridge come the end of the calendar year.

“I feel as sharp as ever, I’m ready to go. I had a great pre-season, felt really good and I’m looking forward to the future to be honest with you,” Sturrudge said in August on liverpoolfc.com.

“I feel great, it’s the best I’ve felt for a long time, and I’m looking forward to this season.

“It’s the nature of football – sometimes you feel great, sometimes you don’t feel great.

Hes definitely lost that yard or two of pace, but I am not sure if its physically or mentally gone

There was one instance on Saturday where he went for a ball and the Sturridge of old would have out sprinted the defender to it, but you could see him slow up and almost jog towards it

I guess the thing he has in his mind is if he gets caught or over exerts will he get injured again.

I think he is brilliant in possession though, he barely ever gives the ball away and almost always fashions a shooting chance. He's different in that respect to Firmino who doesn't have the same thirst for goals.

More than a yard or two I'd say. There's no room for sentimentality in football if you want to kick on. He should have been moved on a year ago but I suspect we couldn't.

It's a shame watching him now as he's fallen further than Torres did when he went to Chelsea.
