The pundits reactions are really weird, it's for sure a red card due to dangerous play, he goes in from the side and has clear contact with the back of Elliots legs.

Unless you get it completely cleanly - which almost never happens when you launch a tackle from behind, it's a foul Everytime and then a red based on severity of it.

There can be freak accidents resulting in a red card, soloman Rondon on James McCarthy springs to mind, where Rondon didn't have time to react after the latter planted his foot in front of the ball as Rondon went to strike it, but this wasn't one of them

Its definitely a red and it's a classic case of you see what you want to see depending on your disposition.

TBH, I don't mind commentators playing down the tackle as the Leeds player looked distraught and there's no point turning the knife in. He went off without complaint.

I didn't think it was a red. There was no ill intent, just a really really unfortunate outcome. He didn't "fly" in aggressively as some are making out. He slid in from the side/behind and won the ball pretty cleanly initially, his trailing leg of course carried through obviously doing the damage.

Yeah, they also have said he's been discharged from hospital (although he'll need surgery this week) so that rules out a bad break. I find it odd that he's already out of hospital tbh - could be a circumstance of the pandemic.

A red can also be given for footballing misadventure.

The fact he started yesterday just shows how highly Klopp rates him. It was almost a statement in itself that he started. I was fully expecting him to be on the bench with Henderson and Keita fully fit.

He was playing brilliantly and about to come off the next time the ball went out of play then that? It's so cruel.

I haven't watched the replay or looked at that link with a picture (those things make me strangely queasy), but the only positive to take is he's so young that this shouldn't affect his career. Hopefully it's an injury he can fully recover from unlike an ACL or persistent hamstring issues etc.

The link with the picture isn't gruesome, it shows how the damage was caused but doesn't show the damage itself. Seeing that picture, it's easy to see how it was a a straight red tho, his trailing leg is off the ground and impacting with Harvey's standing leg just above the ankle.

One of those where if Elliott's leg was off the ground it would have been fine, but cos it was grounded it had nowhere to go..

Ah ok. I think I'm still a little paranoid from seeing the Djibril Cisse leg break all those years ago. That one was horrific.

I'm with you on that one, I am pretty squeamish when it comes to pics...someone links something on reddit with a 'horror tackle' type heading, and i have to read the comments before I decide if I can dare take a look

There does not have to be ill intent for a foul to be worthy of a red card. Plus he did not slide in, both legs were clearly off of the ground when he started going into the challenge from behind so he had no control.

Think it was maybe Kenneth who put it up earlier in this thread, but the guideline for a sending off was put up and under the rules of the game what he did was red card worthy and pretty clear cut at that.

The pic someone posted shows it was definitely worthy of a straight red tho, if Harv has seen that pic and is still not convinced then there's no hope. It's a contact sport yes, but there are limits to what the contact can be.

I may be going mad, but isn’t the tackle from behind an instant foul?

So. It’s a straight red for me Clive. Almost a good tackle, but reckless and from behind the player. If those are allowed then we will have amazing ball retrieval stats and hospital wards full of mangled players.

Could not find Kenneth's post, but Rafa Justice also put up the UEFA the ruling with regards to sending off offences so dropping it in here.

Does not matter what brain dead idiots like Neville & co want to say when they pretend they have a clue about the game and it's rules. The actual rules of the game say it was a sending offence and a pretty clear cut one at that.

                            SENDING-OFF OFFENCES

A player, substitute or substituted player who commits any of the following offences is sent off:
denying the opposing team a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by a handball offence (except a goalkeeper within their penalty area)
denying a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity to an opponent whose overall movement is towards the offender's goal by an offence punishable by a free kick (unless as outlined below)
                            serious foul play
                            biting or spitting at someone
                            violent conduct
using offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or action(s)
receiving a second caution in the same match
entering the video operation room (VOR)
A player, substitute or substituted player who has been sent off must leave the vicinity of the field of play and the technical area.

                            SERIOUS FOUL PLAY

A tackle or challenge that endangers the safety of an opponent or uses excessive force or brutality must be sanctioned as serious foul play.

Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force or endangers the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play.

Don't think it was ill-intentioned but the challenge was dangerous. Tackle from behind, side on. It wasn't a clean one footed tackle. Struijk's trailing leg trapped Elliott's lower leg.

Gutted for Elliott. He was starting to look very, very good. Hope he recovers well.
                                Another MASSIVE game
