it does seem he was intent on leaving the club in a good state for the next guy. Not ideal this announcement happening now but seems they had to get ahead of it. It's either going to galvanize the lads or completely derail the season... hopefully the former.

It's also possible that the club had identified Xabi as Klopp's long term successor and didn't want to risk losing out on him if they waited around

The talk when Ancelotti extended was because they were looking to Xabi as their new manager from the 26-27 season.

Xabi has talked before about how he wouldn’t be rushed with his career progress and will do it at his own pace. So he might be a bit too early for him coming to us.
