Maybe a bit But if he’s staying then he’s staying, and if he’s staying then we need him to score goals and win us matches.

31 g+a's was pretty good in a season where people thought he was "****ing ****".

Did Torres, Firmino or Mane even manage to do that? Especially considering he sat on the bench for the run in and missed a few games in the middle with injuries. Loads of room for improvement, but acting like he is Benteke or Bago****ti levels bad is just classic social media hyperbole.

If Slot can tighten us up at the back and we're not as reliant on scoring 3+ goals to win games then it might take the pressure off our strikers a fair bit IMO.

As much as people throw the book at Nunez, Salah, Gakpo and Diaz for wasting chance after glorious chance, at the end of the day it was our defence that let us down badly this season. It was our second highest scoring season, so we obviously scored loads. It was the constant going behind within 15minutes of games that killed us and piled pressure onto our forwards to have to score, which leads to desperation and in turn snatching at chances as we saw with Nunez, Diaz + Salah. Their composure in front of goal was awful.

It’s a fresh start for everyone imo. Even Klopp said in his post match talk to the team that receiving new messaging would be important. It’s sad to see a legend depart, but I guess exciting to see what new ideas and tactics Slot can bring. We are not far away.

This is exactly right, if we won more games 1-0 or 2-0 then we'd be laughing at Nunez ****ing up one on ones or hitting the bar.

But I don't think that's the way people are thinking about Nunez. It's more that he gets loads of chances and needs loads of chances. Put it this way -would you back him in a 1 on 1 in the champions league final when that might be 1 of only a handful of chances?
                          Really?

I'd back Son too but look at how that turned out.

It's a very myopic way of thinking though. We've been through this argument all before. Most look at it and see the chances he doesn't finish (misses is a poor choice of words IMO) and by default think he's ****. But the numbers tell a different story. A **** player is not getting 31g+a's in a season are they. If he finished all his chances his numbers would be off the charts!

I reckon half the chances he gets most other strikers don't even get into the position to **** it up in the first place. His movement and willingness to run are what leads to these chances. And yeah, he gets caught offside a lot. Thats the tradeoff isn't it. Our dozy midfielders don't help most of the time btw, they hold the ball too long. You've got a thoroughbred racehorse ready to run into space and they sit there taking 4 touches to pass it. Its like driving an F1 on the streets

He has his faults, sure, but people wanted him to be Messi, Suarez and Torres all in one player. It's daft, and has just lead to disappointment. Some of the arguments ive read on here and elsewhere are absurd. Now people are hanging **** on him because of his attitude towards the end of the season and apparent lack of enthusiasm during Klopps farewell. The one thing nobody could criticise is his effort through this two seasons...then the moment his head drops after copping abuse non stop people start using that as a stick to beat him with. The guy cant win.

And no. I wouldn't fwiw. Theres about a handful of strikers you actually would back in that situation. I wouldn't back Mo anymore for example. He's just as likely to miss as Darwin.

I wouldn't have backed Mane or Firmino either. Both were pretty average finishers for the amount of chances they got, something people have forgotten (if we're using that metric)

Anyway. He's got a clean slate in my book. Im excited to see if Slot can improve him.

Slot has a history of fine tuning strikers and turning them into much better finishers, I for one am taking a punt on Nunez winning the golden boot next season.
