Rio has said himself in interviews that he was not ready for too many regular games this season so not going to use him as a stick to beat Slot with.
Is only over the past couple months that Rio has even moved up to doing close to what the senior players do in training.
Sooner build him up right this season than rush him in and risk him getting injuries that stall his future progress.
Also think that during a not so good season there will always be more made of young players and many will be spoken off as if they are genuine solutions despite very little to back that up.
Did not see many looking for the young players to be put on in place of seniors last season, no clamour to give them "safer" run outs within a perfroming team. Same as when we were going over 90 points a season with Klopp, we were not saying the promising young talents need to be getting even more game time. No we were enjoying the ride and wanting the guys doing the business to be be playing each week.
Think many of our current crop of promising players have done very little to suggest they are ready to take on senior players. Rio is probably the only one. Leoni too if we count him as a promising young player given he is only 19.
Very few of the rest I would have confidence in, in terms of them coming into the team and holding their own, especially coming into a disjointed team if their positions were in midfield or at the back.
Gakpo for me should have played less, but I would have been using Chiesa more (with Rio as a sub for him) or even putting a combination of Kerkez and Robertson on the left flank at times. Biggest misfire we have had in attack this season was starting both Salah and Gakpo on wide in the same games.
One we could start imo as long as we had someone doing something different on the other flank, but two listless wide players both looking to slowly cut in just made our game even more plodding again as the ball could not be released forward quickly and defences were not being stretched.
