most of the best managers ive seen are people who had frustrations and/or limited success in their playing careers hence having things to prove:Originally posted by SouthAfricaRed View PostINot everybody that is a Brilliant player has the ability to pass on their knowledge and experience. In fact very few Brilliant players, have gone on to have a Good career after playing
clough, ferguson, paisley, shankly, wenger, mourinho etc..

IMO The only Great players I can think of that have made it as managers are Beckenbauer, Cruyff and Dalglish.Originally posted by enema of the state View Postmost of the best managers ive seen are people who had frustrations and/or limited success in their playing careers hence having things to prove:

Anybody think of someone else?Just believe and you never know what will happen.
According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

Van Basten and Klinsmann - Jury still out if they are good managers
Sammer, I wouldn't class him as a Great Player, but he's definately doing Ok as a managerLast edited by SouthAfricaRed; 11-12-06, 12:56 PM."For whom He did foreknow, He also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of His Son"

Sammer, I wouldn't class him as a Great Player, but he definately did well as a manager
most of these if not all have coached abroad
very rare in the english league...in fact id go so far to say that the very best british footballers have largely fallen short as top level coaches: keegan/robson/souness/francis/platt/GAZZA

I think in Heighways defence, it could be argued that the players he's had to develop simply aren't good enough. If the talent isn't there, what can you do?
Southampton have a much bigger catchment area than us too. Apart from Portsmouth, they have been the only big club (premierhsip) on the south coast for over a decade, and their scouting network stretches as far as Bristol, Devon and Cornwall. If you're a kid in those areas, they are more likely to choose Sothampton than Bristol Rovers.
We have to compete with umpteen other clubs in the North West to get the best local talent.
Southampton had the foresight to implement such a strategy in the 90s, and it has helped them. It didn't save from relegation though.Oh I don't know.

It's because their owner is more interested in making money by selling the players than keeping the club in the EPL"For whom He did foreknow, He also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of His Son"
