    Guardian article

Manchester United have made a sensational attempt to capitalise on Raheem Sterling’s contract stand-off with Liverpool by registering their interest in the wantaway England international.

Despite completing the £25m transfer of the PSV Eindhoven winger Memphis Depay this week, and the acceptance that Liverpool are highly unlikely to sell a key player to their fierce north-west rivals, United have inquired about Sterling’s availability in anticipation of him agitating for a move from Anfield this summer.

The 20-year-old and his representative, Aidy Ward, are due to meet the Liverpool manager, Brendan Rodgers, and chief executive, Ian Ayre, on Friday and are expected to confirm the club’s long-held suspicions that he will push for a lucrative transfer this summer.

Irrespective of that push, Liverpool informed United that their second highest goalscorer this season – with 11 goals – is not for sale at any price.

Whether that will deter United from returning with an offer that will tempt Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool’s owner, to sanction a move that would stun not only both clubs’ supporters but the wider football world remains to be seen and also, at this stage, highly unlikely.

Manchester City are primed to take advantage of Sterling’s desire to leave Liverpool and are willing to pay the winger around £150k a week to entice him to the Etihad Stadium as part of their drive to recruit young British talent this summer.

But, as with their city rivals, it would take an extravagant bid to tempt Liverpool who have Sterling under contract until 2017 and are currently minded to hold him to his £35,000-a-week deal until next summer.

FSG, who have asked Rodgers to lead a review into this season’s failure to qualify for the Champions League, showed with Luis Suárez and Arsenal in 2013 that they are unwilling to sell to a Premier League rival and have informed United that is the situation with Sterling.

              Exactly

Never going to happen. I do like a good fiction story.

So he's wanted because he's truly a 40m-60m player right now?

It's one situation or the other.
                One tit for another.

He's isn't that player yet nor is he ****e and overrated. Look back at the ravings of LFC fans last season about this lad yet now because he's a contract rebel he's no longer the best young player in England in most of their eyes. It will take that sort of money to buy him because of his ability now, his potential, the fact we don't need to sell and the fact he has 2 years left on his deal. He'll still be here in September unless a foreign club offers a decent wedge imo.

If Bayern are rumoured to be interested than we should try include lewandowski into the deal. Rumours are Pepe doesn't really fancy him.

                      Mario Balotelli.

                      Golden Boy winner.

Played for Inter Milan, AC Milan, Manchester City and Liverpool.

Now I don't think Sterling is ****, far from it, but Balotelli is a prime example of how someone can be rated the top young talent in Europe, go on to sought by some of the most famous clubs in Europe and Man city, and turn out to be horribly overrated.
I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.

Gotze is supposedly not overly rated by Pep either.

Is Lewandowski a particularly pacey player though or is he more of a Dzeko type?

He's a 'play in the champions league' type.

A good example but as you say, Sterling is not ****. He has it all to prove but if he gets rid of his agent and gets his head down I've no doubt he will have prove it.

He puts too much trust in Ward for advice and Ward has been manipulating him/the situation for months, telling him he could have more money, bigging him up, telling him (and the press) that the top clubs are interested and that he will be a regular there and win trophies, unsettling him by telling him he can have everything he wants and more if he moves. The main driving factor behind this is Ward and the fact that getting a move for Sterling nets him a good few million quid and establishes him and his new company.
This is probably where I am with this. I do think that Sterling may want to go back to London from a personal point of view but I do think the driving force behind this is Ward and his own self promotion.

If you look at one of his other client, there are quite a few similarities with Sterlings situation. Young English player who's potential is being talked up in the media and who also did an interview without the clubs permission. How would it look to potential new clients if you see Sterling and Berahino move to 'big' clubs on big money? It would appear to these naive, impressionable lads that Ward was the messiah.

Now Ward has one other player on his books. That is Oxlade-Chamberlain. The difference between him and Sterling/Berahino is that his father is the main man, not Ward. I would bet rather a lot that if Mark Chamberlain wasn't involved, Arsenal would be going through what we and WBA are.
