I remember seeing some games for the reserves/youth cup team (can't remember which) where Sterling's finishing looked shocking. The problem with young players is that any view people have on their attributes are necessarily drawn from a limited sampling, and often that sample is taken in unsettled teams (as in the recent friendly), which is more of an issue given that young players are usually less consistent."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

Sterling was very lucky in that he emerged at a time when we had a threadbare squad and he kind of had to play and that first team experience he got the season before last helped his development massively and he was really able to kick on and establish himself the following season.
Ibe is currently where Sterling was when he first came into the side with the likes of Wisdom and Suso. However, unfortunately for Ibe we will have a much stronger squad this season, especially in the attacking areas, and unless we have absolutely horrific luck with injuries I can't see him getting a look in. It's a real shame for the lad because he really wants to stay and emulate what Sterling did, but I do think it will be best for him to go on loan somewhere, preferably in the Premier League, and get some games under his belt. It won't be the same as getting those games with us, but it's his best chance of improving enough to get a look in next season.

I think it shows how we don't develop talent properly in this country, if we had a proper squad last season. Flanagan would be released and probably find himself in league 1, maybe a struggling championship and Sterling would be in the championship. I wonder what players could have been good for us given the chance and some time. Suso is probably the most glaring of the current lot.

Rarely do players make it after going out loan, they just don't seem to develop as much as if they stay and get games.
Signing Alberto and loaning out Suso made no sense at all.

On the 1:45 mark, was that Rossitter scampering from midfield to receive Ibe's pass? Great run that, reminded me of Stevie when he was younger. Same running style as well.Originally posted by Mostar View Post
Edit, watched it again. It was Flanno.
Are we winning?

that is a really good point about young players making it. Obviosuly sometimes there is a talent that would make it anywhere but the majority of players that make it must have had a big slice of luck.
I always thought that a young player would be better off going to a team like Southampton, West Ham or a championship club when offered contracts at a young age - because they would be likely to get a place in the team. Looking back at LFC's recent history and it is littered with players that were going to be the next big thing. Richie Partridge was supposed to be better than any prospect on the wing we had seen. He never made the breakthrough and when he was about 21, went on loan to Coventry and was by far their best player. He came back to LFC to have another go and never did anything. He ended up playing for some crap team in Wales or back in Dublin. In reality, had he came through the ranks at Coventry, or a team at that level, then it is likely that he could have done well, ended up at a mid-table premier league club and would probably be made for life now.....
The point made above about Barkley is brilliant though. He crashed and burned at Leeds. And in relaity, had moyes known his arse from his elbow, he could have probably taken Barkley for £5m - £8m when he went to united. Instead they spend 28m on Fellaini!!! It is strange how he couldn't cut it at leeds in the championship though and now he is viewed as the future of english football.
