If this happens the first question at the press conference should be "so you turned down five jobs in order to say yes to the barcodes did you Brendan? Really?"

Former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers favourite to take over at Newcastle

Former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is now the favourite to take charge at Newcastle, should Steve McClaren's turbulent reign end in the sack.

The Northern Irishman has been out of a job since being sacked by Liverpool back in October, and is currently the bookmakers' favourite for the job, just ahead of former Toffees boss David Moyes.

However, according to reports in the North East, Rodgers could be next through the doors at St. James Park, after McClaren's side slipped into the relegation zone following a 5*-1 drubbing at the hands of Chelsea.

The former England manager has only won seven games since he took over in the summer, and the pressure on him is increasing, with the incentive to stay in the Premier League greater than it has ever been with the incoming TV revenue.

McClaren's exit could mean a reunion between Rodgers and former Reds midfielder Jonjo Shelvey, who recently moved to the Toon for around £12million from Swansea City, and was a player highly regarded by his former manager.

If you fancy a punt, Rodgers is 23/10 with Paddy Power to take over as Newcastle boss, or you can get David Moyes at odds of 3/1.
