Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has revealed he has held talks with his staff to get to the bottom of their inability to maintain their performance levels for a full game.

The Premier League leaders have seen their second-half performance in recent games heavily scrutinised after finding themselves on the back foot against Swansea, Manchester United and Aston Villa.

It had been suggested the issue was down to a lack of fitness, but Rodgers believes the problem is likely to be more mental than physical.

"Funnily enough we have sat down this week and looked at that," Rodgers is quoted as saying in The Times. "For me it has been mostly in the last two games.

"We intentionally dropped our lines a bit deeper against Aston Villa because of their pace, and that was fine.

"Against Manchester United we dropped too deep, too quickly. Even though we looked comfortable that was not the type of game we want to play

"And against Swansea we were very good in the first half but were not how I expected us to be in the second half.

"We showed great resilience and great determination to take a point but I was disappointed we didn't get all three.

"It is more of a mental than physical thing for me. A few weeks ago we were saying how fit all the players looked.

"Their condition is fine. But sometimes it is something natural that happens in a game." link

If you chase the ball a lot then you get more tired players and tired players get injured more often.
So you hadn't noticed our strategy of defending from the front?

The answer will emerge in time so for now I'm just enjoying the fact we beat Manchester United and we're top of the league.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

Anyone know if this is true ?

Nothing to see there. Mourinho would say the same thing today, as would Moyes.

by general consensus we've had a pretty good summer in the transfer window. Again its only one defeat but at some point the excuses have to stop and we need to deliver. Im hoping he didn't say that tbh.

In the games we've won we haven't really looked convincing but for where we are the manner of the wins isn't as important as the results. However the cause for concern has been there throughout especially the second half performances, the inability of the midfield to dominate games.

maybe spending 20m on aspas, Alberto and illori wasn't wise when the midfield still looks uncompetitive.

Yes we had a decent window, but we all know it could have been better had we been able to complete that Donestsk player. Or Willian. I'd like to think that's what he was referring to.

Problem with our midfield is not money. Its reputation. As someone else (Imy?) mentioned, does Brendan have the balls to drop Gerrard and/or Lucas? If not, whats the point of buying a £20m bench warmer?

The one player he took a risk not signing, and is now paying for it, is Erikson. That frankly baffled everyone.

eriksen isn't that much of a loss given that we have coutinho who imo has the potential to be a much better player if hes not already.

Every manager in the world would like a better squad or just another player but spurs and man city apart I think we have done some good business. The signings of the younger lads when we've got more pressing concerns is worrying. We have two 7m players playing for the u21s. Where's the sense in that if BR wanted another forward player who could make an impact this season.

The midfield isn't right and BR hasn't been able to solve this since day 1. If we sort the middle of the pitch out then I think the team will be much more solid. Rafa believed Gerrard couldn't play there and the way shelvey just ran untracked right infront of him while he watched on was ridiculous.

I think we need to start Lucas and Henderson together at the base and let Gerrard play further forward or you find a replacement for Lucas because hes not good enough to do his own and gerrards running in every game.

If Gerrard plays centrally he needs babysitting.

I'll let him off his brain fart yesterday, after all he's got no one to blame but himself for what happened. A good dose of reality may be beneficial in the long run, after all we wouldn't want him to get caught up believing his own hype too soon.

He made mistakes and something is wrong with the team, but he has been showing himself capable of adjusting and learning, something not every manager can do so I'm not despairing yet.

Wondered how long it would be before Raymond had his say.

What’s going on at Liverpool? Brendan Rodgers is an open-minded manager who has travelled the football world and proved himself at Swansea.

But Brendan should understand he has to adjust the playing style to the available players instead of playing passing game with rugby players

A golden rule in football: adapt the playing style to the available players or one should buy the right players to execute the playing style

Also, it’s time for Rodgers to evaluate why Liverpool is the only team not to have scored yet in 2nd half. Lack of fitness and/or freshness?

Liverpool has clearly faded away in last phase of most games this season and have picked up multiple injuries already. Training methods?
