OK, great. I don't think he gives us what we need to finish 1st. I think the space he occupies is too important and I would prefer something different at 130000K a week. Something like SG in a 2006 version. The first part from AUG to DEC was poor at best from him.
I understand that I am pretty much alone with this view. We wont win anything with him as play-maker. He simply isn't consistent enough.
Do I care if he manageged to to get MOM on a website or win an OPTA-STAT a few times? For 130.000K I wouldnt expect any less. Infact - I would expect A LOT more!

I think we need players like Gerrard that link us to a past where we at least challenged for big honours. We also need to be looking to make him a less vital component of the team.
He's been consistently good if not as great as he once was. I think he was key to our improvement second half of the season - when Rodgers started accepting we would be more effective with a slightly more direct game."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

Totally agree, I was pretty vocal in my criticism of Gerrard before christmas but he really picked up form and was played a vital role for us, I felt he contributed both to attack and defence. I'm not saying he should get a pay hike, but doesn't need to feel bad picking up his check (relatively speaking, they should of course all be ashamed of how much they make).Originally posted by dww View PostI think we need players like Gerrard that link us to a past where we at least challenged for big honours. I don't really know how people feel in a good position to judge relative player wages. Most of the time all we have is press reports which we know to be generally unreliable.Originally posted by The_weatherman View PostTotally agree, I was pretty vocal in my criticism of Gerrard before christmas but he really picked up form and was played a vital role for us, I felt he contributed both to attack and defence. I find it hard to imagine that we would be able to buy in a player that would contribute as much as Gerrard (and pay their wages) with the savings we would make by not paying him (in a fantasy universe where that were even an option on the table)."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

Has Gorby been seen since Sunday? He's obviously out on the razz still celebrating Carra's retirement.Originally posted by Muddled View Post
He's got to be in a drunken stupor, frantically spoofing over our carthorse-less squad list.

I hear you DWW but the improvement as you call it was nowhere near good enough. We still threw stupid points all over the place in the second half of the season! No doubt he is an icon and has been a great player and Captain for the club. I just don't think it will take us where we want to go. He has too little impact these days. Who can afford to have a deep player that offers no real threat on the final 1/3 at 130K a week? Not a consistent threat anyway.Originally posted by dww View PostI think we need players like Gerrard that link us to a past where we at least challenged for big honours. I think players like Coutinho, Sturridge, Suarez has made a bigger impact. I think we would be better of with new blood at the center. We should be able to get top blood in at 130.000 a week!
I think most here fail to see the real issue. It isnt about whether SG is a good player. It is what we could get instead for the same money at the center.
Sentimentality will not win us anything.
We will not make the cut and start winning again until SG is not a part of the starting XI.

£130,000 a week is less that £7m for a year do you really think we would get an improvement in the squad for that (fee + wages)? We need to add more not take away IMO. You also have to think that he's good for our brand which should be factored in against the cost.Originally posted by CAD View PostI hear you DWW but the improvement as you call it was nowhere near good enough. I also think that you have to consider the make up of the squad in terms of the right balance of personalities and getting everyone to buy into the same goals. I think Gerrard is a positive in that regard and one that would be hard to replace."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."
