Jamie Carragher admits the return of Steven Gerrard to competitive action will help to lift spirits in and around the Liverpool camp.

The Reds have been shorn of their influential skipper's services for 17 games, with a lengthy spell on the sidelines stretching back some six months.

During his time on the treatment table, Kenny Dalglish has been busy bringing in a number of midfield reinforcements.

Gerrard is, however, still very much the talisman at Anfield and Carragher admits it will be a relief to all concerned to see him back out on the field.

It is expected that he will be returned to the fold in Wednesday's Carling Cup clash at Brighton and, following a 4-0 humbling at Tottenham, his presence will be welcomed with open arms by his fellow Reds.

"He is the captain, the biggest name here," Carragher said in the Daily Express.

"His presence will give everyone a lift. It's disappointing, of course, that he has missed the start of the new season, but what a player we now have to come back to help.

"I speak to him on a daily basis, so I know how much he has wanted to get back. That is what makes him the player he is. He is just so desperate to be part of the new scene."

      Bonus

Gerrard faces added competition for places from the likes of Charlie Adam and Jordan Henderson this season, but Carragher insists everyone at Anfield now faces a battle to earn a starting berth - regardless of reputation.

"It's not just Stevie," he added.

"When you are out of the picture that is the way it is in football. You move on.

"There has been a lot of talk about the players we have brought in and rightly so. But there is also the added bonus of knowing that Stevie is coming back to help out as well.

"He is simply one of the best players around."

Joke of a contribution from Carragher. What the **** is he doing to give everyone a lift? He's supposed to be one of the all time legends and a player we simply can't do without, yet he's coming up with this ****e about getting a lift from another player. Exactly why did he get that 2 year contract extension, again?

Fowler can turn water into wine and bread into a wheat field so Im sure he has the power to give us 10 more years of top class Stevie (or until we find a way to clone him )

Looked good again yesterday. I'm scared ****less when he's on the ball, just imaging the worst, but a few times he's fully extended his leg and burst straight on without breaking his stride. Must be feeling well enough, in his head & body to do so. Anyone that's had the same injury will understand what I'm on about.

30 minutes against the blue****e, start against the mancs. I can't wait to he bangs one in again, no better game then either of those too do so either.

Really do love the man. He's carried us on his back for such a long time & give me so many great memories that I'll never forget.

first time in a long, long time I thought he looked capable of unleashing a piledriver from outside the box and getting about like he used to - obviously he's on the comeback trail and it's early days but if he's finally over his injury problems it'll be a masssive boost for us.

A second half lineup of (or even first half maybe)

                  Carroll
                  Suarez
                  Bellamy Gerrard Kuyt
                  Lucas
                  Back 5

is a scary prospect for any opposition team, specially given the fluidity of movement from all of these players (barring Lucas). Defenders just won't know where these players will turn up next, even Carroll will pick the ball up from the midfield at times with Bellamy being the most forward player, etc.

All five forward players are known goalscorers and have good one touch passing (including Kuyt when he's playing well). Its very manure like. A little light defensively but the emphasis on the opposition being sh*t scared of us rather than the other way round.

Any chance we can start a new thread like Steven Gerrard is back or something or is that a bit premature?

Don't pick me, Fabio! Returning Gerrard insists he's not ready for crunch England showdown

Last updated at 8:22 PM on 30th September 2011

Steven Gerrard has effectively ruled himself out of England's crucial Euro 2008 qualifier with Montenegro on Friday after admitting he is short of peak fitness.

Fabio Capello will be at Goodison Park on Saturday to check on the Liverpool midfielder following his recovery from a groin problem but Gerrard will start against Everton on the bench.

There is a chance Capello could select Gerrard, 31, in his squad on Sunday night but the midfielder has told the Italian he is not ready.

'I think everyone knows I'm still not 100 per cent match fit I hope the Italian realises this as well,' said the dynamic midfielder, who will report for international duty if he is asked.
'I have only probably had two 12-minute games. I'm not really sure how much I'm going to play against Everton so, in my opinion, it's probably still a bit too early. 'I don't make the decisions. Those decisions are down to the England manager, whether he picks me or not.

'I'm sure he'll have a discussion with Kenny (Dalglish) and between them they can decide what the right thing is for me. 'In my opinion there are other players out there who are match fit who are probably more suitable for that game, but we'll have to wait and see. If I'm called up, I'll deal with it.'

Losing to Montenegro next week could see England drop to second place in their group and land them in a two-legged play-off with a team from another group.
He is likely to start Saturday's Merseyside derby against Everton at Goodison Park on the bench and the 31-year-old is worried rushing back into the fray could set his recovery back.

He said: 'I totally understand that. With experience I have come to learn about my own body and I haven't been out for two or three weeks with a hamstring or a calf injury. I've had a reconstruction of my groin and it is going to take time.

'To be fair to Kenny and the medical staff, they have handled me perfectly so far and I'm sure they'll do the same in the coming weeks. 'It's important that I don't force it, they don't force it and we don't push it too hard, but I am at the stage now where the only way I'm going to get my match sharpness, match fitness and get back to the form I want to play at is if I get game time. 'But I also understand it's got to be at the right time as well.' Meanwhile, Gerrard has urged Liverpool to 'play without fear' when they travel to Everton.

The Reds start the match at Goodison in fifth place and Gerrard feels the team must stay calm and not get caught up in the atmosphere if they are to take all three points.
He said: 'We need to play without fear. Sometimes in derby games you can get involved in the fight and forget to play. It becomes a battle and a tussle rather than us settling and playing our own game. 'We like to pass and move, attack quick and stay compact when we haven't got the ball, so if we can settle really quickly into the game I'm really confident we can get the right result."

Describing the derbies as 'the two favourite games for me with Manchester United a close second', Gerrard added: 'We've got a very good derby record over the years at Goodison Park, so I don't see why we can't go there with confidence, play our own stuff, not get involved in a fight and I think if we can stay in the game in the first 15-20 minutes we'll come through and win it.'
