Gerrard is the second best player I have seen at LFC but its not by much

Crucially for me Gerrards career has coincided with a time when media and tv coverage has given him exposure to a wider pubic, but certainly in the era of the Premier League hes the stand out player by a mile

I was fortunate to watch Kennys debuts (at Wembley & Anfield) and didnt miss many of his performances at Anfield till his retirement, to me he was and still is the best player I have seen play in this country. I think part of the argument is that many of the people never saw Kenny on a consistant basis

People talk about Kenny constantly playing with great players and there is something in that, but he made good players great and great players even better

Gerrard at times was surrounded by some extremely good players also Reina, Carragher, Hyypia, Hamman, Alonso, Mascherano, Torres, Suarez, Fowler, Owen, McAllister

Very different players though Kenny & Stevie. Stevie is much more of an athlete and that was part of the thing that made him special. Kenny didnt need pace or athleticism

The one thing Gerrard has done is made me re-evaluate the best ever 11. 15-20 years ago I'd have gone for a 4-4-2 and probbly picked players that would have made more of a "team" than a collection of individuals

Gerrard and Suarez have changed that and I would actually have to shift some of our players round for my best 11 now

To me when doing any best 11 it would include Kenny & Stevie, Rush, Barnes Souness & Suarez

That probably means changing from 4-4-2 to 4-3-3 or 4-2-1-3 with Barnes, Rush & Suarez upfront with Kenny a little deeper and Gerrard in midfield with Souness holding

Anyway all this is getting away from the matter that Gerrard has been a brilliant servant and will be remembered a long time as one of our greatest players

Well put Lec - you sometimes forget how athletic he was - such pace and power with a superb work ethic. He was also injured on and off for almost 3 years so he could have been even better.

That 18 months he had off Torres and ahead of the best midfield in the land was amazing - goals and assists galore. Super super player and better because he truly loved the club.

Imagine being an academy player and one of your coaches was Steven ****ing Gerrard. Regardless whether he'd be the best coach, the buzz would be something else. As has been mentioned by many, he wasn't just a wonderful player, he was a force of nature. Proper Roy of the Rovers fantasy, yet he did it all and more, time and time again.

Injuries did hit Gerrard hard at times

Read something the other day that from the day he signed till sometime in 1980/81 Kenny didn't miss a League game

Always felt that them injuries hit Gerrard at a bad time as was elevating himself into a true world class player so the injuries held him back a little as could have been a bit more to come from him.
Nope, don't need anger management, you just need to stop pissing me off!

I think injuries hampered him for periods.

But isn't it funny how top class players from all over the world are paying tribute to Steven Gerrard? Yet the pathetic trash-can media in England had 10 years of "Gerrard or Lampard" on their back pages every summer.

It is similar to Paul Scholes - he was rightly appreciated by United fans but not really by the english public or 'team england'. Yet the rest of the football world were left scratching their heads at how he was shunted out to the left wing for Ingerland.

For me, Gerrard was amazing. Nothing epitomises him more than that famous night in Istanbul. I've seen Messi beat Real Madrid single handedly and I've seen Zidane do some amazing things. I've seen Roy Keane drag Manchester United to a european cup final away to Juventus with an amazing performance - all while knowing that he would miss the final.

But I don't think we will ever seen a performance like Gerrard v AC Milan in Istanbul again. He scored an amazing header (didn't know he had it in him) and he won us the penalty. But he was everywhere that night. He played about 4 positions that night and was amazing at every one. He left everything on the pitch that night and more. I remember when Rafa put him right back to negate the substitute winger Serginho and Gerrard just owned him. He was unreal.

True, i think it would guarantee all the kids are at 100% trying to impress. That in itself is a reason to have him back.

Gerrard was some player. Kenny never played in a poor Liverpool team. Gerrard did - in quite a few.

Still, winning the double as player-manager? What an achievement that is!

If I was in charge of us, I'd be offering him a playing role for the U-23s and put him in charge of managing the U-18s to learn his trade as a coach and inspire the youngsters.
