That’s why Jurgen Klopp is being embraced with fervour by Liverpool fans in a city sometimes known for its doubting cynicism, at least sceptism, also.

Because he is real, too.

Jürgen Klopp has been appointed as the new manager of English Premier League club Liverpool. On Friday the 48-year-old Dortmund legend signed a three-year contract with the Anfield outfit, who have won 18 English league titles and eight European competitions.

The former BVB boss has been brought in by the Reds to repeat the success he enjoyed with the Black and Yellows between 2008 and 2015. With the club more or less a sleeping giant when he first arrived in Dortmund seven years ago, Klopp gave Germany's first winners of a European trophy a new style and a new identity. He also led the club to two German League titles (2011, 2012), the first-ever double in the club's history (they won the DFB Cup in 2012 too), the final of the UEFA Champions League (2013) as well as three DFB Cup finals (2012, 2014, 2015) and three victories in the German Super Cup (2008, 2013, 2014).

Now the fans of tenth-placed Liverpool will be hoping the Klopp era at Anfield sparks a similar footballing fairytale. Especially as the two clubs share a number of similarities: they are both working-class cities, share a love for football and, of course, sing a very important song: "You'll never walk alone!"

All of Dortmund, including President Reinhard Rauball, Chief Executive Officer Hans-Joachim Watzke and the whole South Stand, wish you, dear Jürgen, lots of luck and lots of success in this new chapter of your career.

I think his arrival may be bad news for Mourinho. I reckon the press have found their new favourite in Klopp. Mourinho's **** gets more tedious by the week and the journos don't seem as captivated by him as they once were. Today's PC was just sensational from Klopp.He's so media savvy it's untrue. It's incredible how he appears to have united everyone involved with the club.

Liverpool fans should fasten seatbelts - Dalglish

Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish says Reds fans should "fasten their seatbelts" with new manager Jurgen Klopp at the helm.

Overall, it's a big thumbs up from King Kenny for the new boss. "I'm sure they'll really enjoy him," he says. "I'm sure they'll take him to their heart. He came across very well this morning and I think that augers well for everybody."

And Dalglish adds: "He seems like someone who is not in love with himself."

In the midst of Liverpool’s last managerial search in 2012, chief executive Ian Ayre faced a question loaded with cynicism

“With the greatest respect, shouldn’t Liverpool be aiming higher than the Wigan and Swansea manager? Is this not a sign of how the club has fallen?”

Ayre gave a defence of the Fenway Sports Group strategy, insisting their most high profile targets were no symbols of lack of ambition or kudos.

To paraphrase: it was not possible at that time to lure Jose Mourinho, Pep Guardiola or Jürgen Klopp to Anfield, so the plan was to identify those young managers who would become the next Mourinho, Guardiola and Klopp.

It was a let down - rather like being convinced of the merits of casting Danny Dyer because Robert Downey jnr is otherwise engaged.

Three years on, amid the varying assessments of Brendan Rodgers' promising but ultimately unfulfilling reign; the diversions regarding a transfer committee; and the questions about the quality of Liverpool’s squad, the significance of the pedigree of the new manager needs reinforcing.

Liverpool are not hunting replicas or polishing the CVs of wannabes in 2015. They’ve bagged themselves the real Jürgen Klopp.

Here is a bone fide A-list manager. If there had been a vacancy at Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Chelsea or in Manchester during the past three months, Klopp would have been interviewed. Forget that Main Stand being erected at Anfield and all the millions invested in the team by FSG, this is the statement of intent The Kop has been waiting five years for

For Liverpool to lure Klopp to Merseyside is the club’s biggest coup since Rafa Benítez left La Liga's champions for Anfield in 2004. It is perhaps even more satisfying because many supporters feared the days of attracting a coach of such clout were gone, certainly for the foreseeable future. Lest we forget, the last three managerial appointments came from Craven Cottage, the Liverpool Legends Lounge and The Liberty Stadium.

When Rodgers was under pressure last year, many of those fans standing by him did so partially because they suspected Eddie Howe, Sean Dyche or Garry Monk would be next in line. No disrespect to each of them – all could go on to manage their country – but it would have felt like more of the same. Liverpool supporters were ambivalent about the idea of another idealistic British coach turning up, seeing Anfield as another step in his apprenticeship with one eye on the England job.

Walk around Liverpool and those of a red persuasion will tell you they’ve become fatigued with the idea of transition, and lost their enthusiasm for managers whose managerial profile only looked impressive once it had the title Liverpool coach stamped upon it.

Many were even mocking the notion of Klopp wanting to come to Liverpool not-so-long-ago.

“Your history means nothing in the modern era,” Liverpool are consistently told. There is some truth to that but this shows it still counts for a lot more than it would at other clubs.

It is unfashionable to praise Premier League owners. It doesn’t suit the Citizen Smith political philosophy where ‘business’ is a dirty word. Whatever happens in the next three years, there must be an acknowledgement FSG have got this appointment spectacularly right.

There have been plenty of just causes for criticism of FSG as they approach their five-year anniversary. Their greatest blunders have been in recruitment, where they have been too often compelled to swiftly amend errors. That is not just on the pitch, but across various departments of the club. Considering their studiousness there are decisions which hint they are impressionable when they spend too much time in a room with charismatic persuaders who aren't as smart as they make out.

But there are also plenty of myths about the Americans. Suggestions they are ‘only in it for the money’ and have no emotional investment in the club are especially unwarranted and grossly inaccurate. There is as much anger and despair in Boston and Los Angeles when Liverpool fail to turn up at Wembley, the Bernabéu and Old Trafford as there is on Walton Breck Road. That’s why Rodgers has gone. They do care. Passionately.

“Executives are just there to sign the cheques,” say those with a memory of Bill Shankly’s favourite quips. That’s what John W Henry, Mike Gordon and Tom Werner have done when it comes to the £290 million spent since 2012, and the other £110 million under Kenny Dalglish. They have facilitated massive investment in the squad and been let down, thus far, by the returns.

They’ve delegated responsibility to construct the playing staff, but if a £35 million striker or £20 million defender turns into a dud, are the owners not entitled to feel disgruntled when January comes along and they are bombarded with tweets demanding they ‘get their hands in their pocket?’

The club’s owners said they came to Liverpool to win, but they did not inherit a club equipped for winning. Every aspect of the institution has needed renovation, not just that stadium, and that was always going to take years rather than months. On the good days, such as during the 2013-14 season, it seemed progress was being made at a pace exceeding all expectations. Now we see that campaign as an example of how a world class talent (Luis Suárez) assisted by good management (we should not rewrite history and downplay Rodgers' contribution) can elevate those around him and make Liverpool title challengers.

That season showed how extraordinary, charismatic, brilliant people can ensure the Premier League table does not need to be shaped entirely by who spends most, but who spends wisest.

One shrewd recruit can make all the difference, and FSG always said they would endeavour to get the best they could.

In Jürgen Klopp, the Liverpool owners may have finally recruited the smartest guy in the room.
