The season's gone at this point.

We're not winning the league at this juncture. If we were bringing in a CB we'd have done so in the first few days of January.

Might as well save whatever money we'd splash on a stop gap and put it towards a first choice partner for Virgil in the summer.

The season is not gone. This is very not us back in the days where by December we were well and truly out of any ongoing title race and the CL was something we watched other teams play in.

The league title is an uphill struggle atm but as we have seen many times this season with other teams, a little burst of wins can see any of the teams near the top move into contention. It is looking a bit tougher right now but tough is what we excel at so we are in no way out of the title fight just yet.

Same goes for the CL. For as long as we are in it, we can win it. Might be a big ask given our current depletions, but look at the squad we won it with in 2005 and suddenly we don't look half bad.

We're only 6 points off, lets not throw in the towel just yet

Damn right. To continue your boxing metaphor we are a few rounds behind on the cards but we still have the sort of stopping power to completly turn things in our favour.

Are they more experienced tha Williams or Philips?

Are they better players than Williams or Philips?

Do they match the sort of physical qualities needs to play in a Klopp team?

Have they played in backlines that are part of teams that played with a high line and/or that have pressed as a unit?

Would one or both be an upgrade, even allowing for some teething errors, on our current back up options?

For me the answer is yes to each of those questions
          3 extra questions needed tho;

Are they on large wages at their current clubs?

What % of those wages would Liverpool have to pay, and how would that affect our wage structure?

Would an additional loan fee be required?

Given that we as a club are probably at best breaking even currently, unless we can lose a large chuck of wages or garner a good transfer fee, we might struggle to attract a player of sufficient quality.

I totally get why a loan isn't appealing, especially from real and Barca. Not wanting to let a fox in the hen house so to speak.

Maybe I'm being uber naive here but I really can't understand if we can't afford to go shopping at Waitrose, but we need better than Lidl why we don't buy from Tesco or Sainsburys?

What would a decent defender from the championship cost? Maybe not the best one (whoever he is) because like the lad we were interested in from Norwich, that's possibly a £10m signing.

But there must be decent players there - possibly at the point where their contracts are running down who'd walk across glass to play for us and be thrilled to be paid £15k p/w and an impoverished Championship club thrilled to get £5 or 6m.

Someone is going to tell me that this wouldn't work but the 'solution' isn't working at the moment, we're definitely not spending £30m in January and at the rate we're going we aren't going to be in the CL next season, so not spending £30m in the summer either.

It's like some weird snobbery with us and other 'top 6' sides that we'd almost always prefer to splash cash abroad rather than dip into the lower divisions for a bargain.

Would be surprised if any CB from the championship that is good enough to slot straight into one of the better PL teams would come cheap in January, and especially to a club that they would think is desperate. Plus any team in the Championship with a CB good enough to go into our first team and not look out of place is probably going to be at one of the teams in the top half of the Championship and in a team that probably has something to play for and that would not be willing to lose a key player in the last week of January.

I also do not think there is any weird snob element with us with regards to buying from lower divisions and/or relegated teams. Robertson, Wijnaldum, Gomez, Ing and Shaqiri come to mind straight away as players from less fancied or relegated clubs over the past five or so seasons.

Do think that we (and a lot of other clubs) by from clubs abroad for one very simple reason and that is value for money. Players from English leagues generally seem to cost quite a bit more than a comparable player from one of the leagues abroad.

Agree to a point about those chasing promotion but we're in the midst of Covid and Championship clubs have no money, so money in the hand has got to be better than the possibility of money via promotion.

And all these guys had played in the top flight (bar Jo Go maybe?).

It's weird there's such a reluctance when lots of decent players have been bought from the lower leagues by other PL clubs and have excelled.

The obvious one from the Championship would be Joe Worrall. 6ft 4in Captain of Nottm Forest, captained England at age-grade level and won the Toulon tournament, played 22 games at Rangers for Gerrard so we should have plenty of scouting intel...I've seen him live plenty of times and he's definitely Premier standard.

But then given our links with Rangers, you'd assume Edwards already knows all about him and it would have happened on Jan 1st if they were going to do it.

Apparently heading to Burnley for less than £20m.

I hadn't realized only four premiership deals had been done

There was a good article on the beeb about the new entry requirements for foreign players - In essence buy British to avoid any doubt unless they are a worldie.

I make no apologies, this is me

I think the reports of £20m for Toulon shows the problem, if Forest want £20m from Burnley they would try and screw even more out of us. I would guess £20m is way more that we would be prepared to pay that sort of figure would put someone in the top 25 or so most expensive signings.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Interesting comment by klopp in the post match interview with BT 'the right players scored'. Well that's what I thought he said. If so I took it that he meant those players have been low on confidence. Would make sense but not something you normally hear him say. I could of just misheard though!

I took it exactly the same way. Bobby, Trent and Mane. Makes sense.

Klopp has been cranky for the last 2 months or so. And with good reason. We've been ****ed over by injuries and ref decisions. And by Covid with a few of our key players having it at various times. It is a bit of a kick in the balls then to see the likes of City take a mini-break in December by playing the Covid card because a few of their squad members had it.

Someone mentioned it here though - in his press conference for the Spurs game he perked up, came across positive and just different. I think he has taken the lows of the last few weeks and has obviously channeled that to motivate the group. His team talk must have been ****in amazing pre-Spurs. Pure Any Given Sunday type **** i reckon. I expect our team will close ranks and ****in go again now.

Also, in hindsight, I think drawing United away in the FA Cup might have been a big blessing. And losing too to be honest. We played really well, got into our attacking groove again and it was a good exercise. It allowed us to play into form. And losing it might have made our players even more determined.

I wouldn't fancy a cup match against West Ham with all of our injuries etc now anyway to be honest.

So let's have a league match instead?
