    If you're United, maybe.

It depends on the clause, typically in Spain it’s lump sum but obviously things can be drafted differently. Huijsen is supposedly payable in 3 installments with 25m as the first payment. Frimpong is 4 equal payments over a set time.

Szozbo was in one go and we took a loan to pay that in one go and obviously we pay more back, this is also common. Sometimes clubs agree to pay more than a release clause if they can negotiate a more favorable payment schedule

    As I said, it depends

Yep. I guess the player could he a dick, refuse to go anywhere else and force the selling club to negotiate terms.

I guess they could offer the club more, but it would be nuts as they can't refuse offers that meet the release clause, it would be immaterial who they preferred to sell to, it's up to the player.

for the wages maybe, but once the clause is triggered, the selling club just has to see what happens. they can offer him a new contract without a clause in it, but the sell clause doesn't change. every club in the world could trigger it at once. going over the clause is just throwing money away, the club can't reject your proposal if it's met.

I think the higher ups knew long long before he came out with his statement that he was going....

    I believe in Michael Edwards...

IMO we need have a system with transfer fees or without it, otherwise it will lead to a very unlevel playing field.
