Financially it probably wasn't the greatest decision, but who knows how much that good will (for all players, not just the ones who didn't work out) played a part in improving squad harmony and contributing to us over achieving when we were on top. We've known all along we can't go toe to toe with City, so we're constantly trying to find marginal gains elsewhere.Originally posted by Fivex View PostAgree with both of you, but imo have been prudent with a shorter contract under the circumstances with option to extend, rather than 4 years. But he was looking good after he came back iirc.
Ox handled it well; from the Guardian:
Liverpool, and the player, knew the full extent of the injury within days of the semi-final first‑leg win at Anfield but did not go public with the prognosis at the request of the England international. Oxlade-Chamberlain did not want the severity of his ligament damage to disturb teammates’ preparations for the Champions League final against Real Madrid in May and kept the news between himself, Klopp and the medical staff involved in his recovery.
Biggest mistake was ignoring his injury record in the first place I think, hopefully lesson learned there.
Lots of our players got big contract boosts, shortly after signing. Some paid off some didn't, but considering the success we've had, I think it was the right call and it's foolish to cherry pick the ones that didn't work to hammer home an agenda and bore the whole world with self congratulating. If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

Yeah, completely agree. We might not have signed several crucial players since, if we’d earned a reputation as a club who is happy to **** on its own players, for example. And then there’s the behind the scenes stuff like squad harmony as you mention, which isn’t as tangible but still makes a difference overall to some degree

Yep, I bet the multimillionaire, engaged to a pop star, 29 year old retirey and former Liverpool and Arsenal player rues the day he chose football as a career!Originally posted by Paul12 View PostSounds like there are no takers so far, at least not on terms he fancies. And he has now presumably missed pre-season.
Football can be glamorous, but it can also be a cruel career choice.Glass half empty club
