Typically clubs protect against this with a clause that ensures payment of all or some add-ons in the event of the players sales within the period of his original contract or a set period of time.

I have a mate in League 1 with this clause and another lad I grew up with played in the Premier League and Championship had similar.

We got 4.5 for them qualifying for CL last season and this year.

We would have got 4.5 if they won the CL last season or this year, oh dear.

But selling him and bringing in other players have indirectly resulted in more money from our CL run.
