It's great you're positive and all but quite frankly I think that argument doesn't work.Originally posted by Fredo View PostBut we are improving. The margin for improvement in the current crop of players is why Klopp hasn't spent a lot this pre season. We did our business last year and the year before.
We can always add strength to the squad. Even if it's only one signing. We've just won the European Cup and still need to improve.
City won the domestic treble and are still upgrading their team.
Stand still and you risk falling behind City again and letting a team like Spurs closer to us.
We showed last season that you can turn around over 20 points against a team in the way we got closer to City.
If you think Spurs landing N'Dombele, and potentially Dybala and Coutinho is not going to give them a chance to replicate that then that's fair enough.
But it's my opinion that we are giving them that chance.
It's utter bollocks from the club to spout about not having money. Our net spend is small against our rivals and we have bigger revenue than most of them.

I really think it's about our future targets.
I remember in the summer of the 17/18 season, when we made that statement about pulling out of pursuing Van Dijk, and then we didn't sign another CB. We went bat**** crazy. Now we've got a God in defence.
And Spurs have shown that you don't need to sign anyone to to replicate form (last season).
Next summer, we may have to deal with one, or both of Salah and Mane looking to leave. Then there'll be the form of Origi and Shaqiri to look at too.
We may have to go very big next summer, and to secure the targets Klopp wants, we're probably having to wait.

Hard to argue that
There are gaps in our squad too, I've not seen a single fan say that our squad is complete. Surely we could have afforded to spend £50-£70m to shore it up

We need backups but the first team is good as any. If you spend £70m on someone who is gonna sit on the bench, you are sending the wrong signal.Originally posted by Norbs View Post

Rubbish! You're putting pressure on players to not be complacent.Originally posted by Fredo View PostWe need backups but the first team is good as any. If you spend £70m on someone who is gonna sit on the bench, you are sending the wrong signal.
City bought Mahrez and have the likes of him and Sane on the bench ffs!

I didn't mean on one player, possibly 2 or 3. Our first 11 is great but the drop off is significant, albeit looking ok on paperOriginally posted by Fredo View PostWe need backups but the first team is good as any. I don't think there is much of a drop off, bar the front three. Our subs pushed us on another level on Sunday.Originally posted by Norbs View PostI didn't mean on one player, possibly 2 or 3. Our first 11 is great but the drop off is significant, albeit looking ok on paper
As for the front three, these are arguably the best front three in the world. Anyone else would be a drop off.Are we winning?

Pretty much exactly my thoughts. All the trotted out answers to this summer's activity don't say the squad is perfect, they all have the caveat of, we have to pay the bills, etc. It's an uncomfortable lie IMO.Originally posted by poorscousertommy View PostIt's great you're positive and all but quite frankly I think that argument doesn't work.

I'm not sure what the strategy is and we won't know for a few years. It could just be the case that FSG aren't willing to invest but it'd be guesswork to suggest anything really. No one will criticise owners a year after a big summer and winning big ears so they've certainly got PR credit in the bank even if this season doesn't work out.

Why would they be sitting on the bench?Originally posted by Fredo View PostWe need backups but the first team is good as any. If you spend £70m on someone who is gonna sit on the bench, you are sending the wrong signal.
4 players rotating across the front 3 easily leaves 30+ starts for all of them, across all competitions. That's without including CL knockout stages.
And this would still allow Origi and Brewster some starts too..

Tell Mané, Salah or Firmino they will be rotated and will be playing only 30 games.Originally posted by Pepe79 View PostWhy would they be sitting on the bench?

I really hope your wrong but I tend to agree, at least one top player to freshen up the squad, and I don't think Fredo has ever been proven right with his optimism bouts. Which got me a bit worried.Originally posted by poorscousertommy View PostIt's great you're positive and all but quite frankly I think that argument doesn't work.
