Thiago has to move to position himself to receive Rodhi's passes. Thiago's are much more accurate

Thiago tests positive for coronavirus and will miss Liverpool clash with Aston Villa

                  Paul Joyce, Northern Football Correspondent
                  Tuesday September 29 2020, 6.31pm, The Times

Thiago Alcantara has become the latest footballer to test positive for coronavirus and will now miss Liverpool’s trip to Aston Villa on Sunday.

The midfielder was also absent for Monday night’s victory over Arsenal due to the illness and is currently self isolating.

Alcantara’s positive result comes in addition to the ten cases announced by the Premier League on Monday evening following their latest round of testing.

Liverpool arranged an additional test for the 29-year-old after he complained of feeling unwell and displayed symptoms associated with coronavirus.

The Anfield club’s policy has been, and remains, to protect individual medical confidentiality with regard to covid-19 testing unless an individual wanted the diagnosis to be made public.

Alcantara, who was signed from Bayern Munich for £20 million 11 days ago, has chosen to waive his right to anonymity in a move which may help break down any stigma attached to contracting the virus.

It appears unlikely that he will be included in the Spain squad for games in Portugal on October 7, at home to Switzerland [October 10] and away to Ukraine [October 13].

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp had said that Alcantara was not “fit enough” to be involved against Arsenal and expected the player to be available again after the international break. That match will see the champions travel to buoyant neighbours Everton for the Merseyside derby on the weekend of October 17.

Alcantara made his Liverpool debut as a substitute in the 2-0 victory over Chelsea just 48-hours after his move from Bayern had been sealed and has been immediately hailed as giving Klopp’s squad an added dimension.

Manchester City players Riyad Mahrez, Aymeric Laporte and Ilkay Gundogan are among the other top-flight players who have tested positive this month, while West Ham United manager David Moyes will be again be absent from the touchline for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie with former club Everton.

Moyes has been working from home since testing positive for coronavirus last week and could return to the club on Thursday should he now test negative.

Liverpool’s Thiago tests positive for COVID-19

                        29 September 2020Updated 18:31 BST

Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara has tested positive for COVID-19, reports James Pearce.

The summer signing from Bayern Munich missed the Premier League win over Arsenal on Monday, with Liverpool revealing his positive test a day later.

When did Thiago test positive for COVID-19?

Thiago trained as normal on Friday, with one onlooker telling The Athletic that the Spain international was looking particularly sharp.

However, he did not train with the rest of the team on Saturday and was left out of the 3-1 win over Arsenal at Anfield.

His positive test was announced by the club on Monday evening. "Thiago has minor symptoms of the virus but is in good health and is getting better," the club said in a short statement.

Why was the result made public?

Liverpool's policy throughout the pandemic has been to protect the medical confidentiality of their players. However, if an individual wanted to make their test results public they would faciliate that, as was the case with Thiago.

First-team doctor, Dr Jim Moxon, told the club's website: “It is the choice of each individual whether they reveal publicly the outcome of a COVID-19 test.

“We have followed all the protocols to the letter and Thiago is OK.

Adam Brown, also known as lynchpin poster 'Liverpool' on Est1892, knew ages ago. He told The Athletic: "I knew ages ago."

                        When will he return?

Ahead of the Arsenal match Klopp said that Thiago had “a minor fitness issue”.

“After the international break he will be fine, for sure,” Klopp told Sky Sports. “That’s the situation in the moment. He is not fit enough to be involved today, but that’s it.”

He will now self-isolate for 10 days, which means he could still feature against Everton in the Merseyside derby on October 17.

What is the situation in the Premier League?

On Monday 10 people returned positive results in the Premier League’s latest round of COVID-19 testing.

The tests were conducted on players and staff last week and returned the highest number of cases in a single round since the new season began this month.

The league said the individuals who had tested positive for the virus would now self-isolate.

Yes, great news. Misses stupid internationals and it's not even an injury. Fantastic. Can't wait to see him against Everton.
