Looking at it again, he gives the keeper the eyes as if he's going to shoot across goal (as most players would), expecting the keeper to move across and leave right hand post free. When the keeper doesn't do this, that's when he adjusts and decides to go through his legs.

The sheer fact that he doesn't lace it (as he normally would 99% of times), suggests to me he knew exactly what he was doing as he had to keep the ball low.

Once we unpick this Nunez on a consistent level it’s over for everyone.

But we can’t have that, we have to dress it up with nonsense to proclaim his genius and world beating status about to reveal itself like Clark Kent ripping open his shirt. For me, that’s where the yawn is. I would have thought Diaz scoring two quality headers to beat Brazil was more noteworthy.

So two weeks ago, Salah fluffs a good opportunity, which incidentally falls to Nunez, who is called offside and misses the chance. Internet goes into meltdown, Nunez is **** again, Liverpool are **** again and despite being the best attacker that day, all the talk is about this offside chance he missed and how that proved he'll never be good enough to be a regular starter. A week later, he's involved in 2 offside incidents again, 2 lovely goals this time, hardly mentioned afterwards.

I wouldn't have commented on this goal at all if I wasn't recovering post op and bored, but I do find it amusing that of all things Nunez, this is the reaction you find disproportionate.

I don’t have an issue with your take on it, but the tweet follows a common narrative, that Nunez is a world beater about to explode, and we’ve heard it since he joined, and have had many incidents of people trying to pretend it’s happening already with hyperbole coupled with excuses for misses. It’s just setting him up to fail and inviting the spotlight when it doesn’t go so well. ‘Why are people highlighting his misses?’, well maybe because some fans have hyped him to the stratosphere.

‘Striker is good but inconsistent’ seems difficult to settle on for some reason.

He gets a lot of offsides but he does seem to have improved the timing of his runs this season. I think as long as he continually improves then he will get there.

That's just not true. The praise he gets pales in comparasson to the criticism he gets for any minor setback.

Happened in preseason, scores consistently for fun, first chance he misses, 'typical Nunez'.

Same two weeks ago, scores 3 games running, was best attacker against Luton but misses one easy chance, 'same old Nunez'.

Sure as night follows day, any missed chance will be followed up with an avalanche of comments such as, erratic, no composure, one way of shooting, only laces it, useless when he has time to think, etc.

Surely then, if people think he's incapable of a certain skill set, it's worthwhile discussing the possibility that maybe he is developing and highlighting evidence of this on the pitch? And is saying that his goal was a good finish and that he meant it really that ott?

I swear some people are happier when we're doing badly.

Everyone misses chances, it’s part of the game and not particularly noteworthy. When you sky the ball over an empty net from 3 yards out and we drop points against a relegation zone side, what on earth do you expect? We’re not talking about ‘any missed chance’ we’re talking about hitting the post from 5 yards, skying it from 3 etc. they’re not normal and ANY player who does them with any regularity is going to be regarded as erratic. When he doesn’t do a Rosenthal and plays well he gets praise, when he embarrasses himself it gets called out. He deserves no more protection from criticism than any other player and unfortunately for him, he’s had more rickets than any other player in his time here.

Well that is what is happening - but whenever it is pointed out that elements of his game that could do with sharpening up you get lambasted with a ‘Salah missed the other day and nobody mentioned that’ etc etc.

Nunez has a high ceiling ability. Wise and he is nowhere near the top of his potential yet.

And he’s still doing ok.

That doesn’t mean I hate him, I want no to fail. I prefer when we are losing. He is streaky but he is still relatively young.

If we are saying g this is the best version of Nunez and he won’t get better or find more consistency then I disagree I think he is capable of much more.

If and when he has ten shots and none go in it seems it’s not possible to comment on that without all of what you said happening. It’s not a pile on. It’s worthy of discussion.
