So Cobo ended up winning the Vuelta but the weekend still saw unprecedented success for British cycling.

Froome got 2nd (incredible) and Wiggins (great ride after not racing since stage 7 of the Tour) 3rd in Spain, Cavendish (most successful British rider ever) won the opening stage of the Tour of Britain, Emma Pooley won the overall in the Tour de l'Ardèche and Simon Yates has become the first Briton to win a stage in the Tour de l'Avenir.

What a ride by Tom Boonen!

And second placed Sébastien Turgot crossed the finish line 1 milimeter (!) ahead of Alessandro Ballan. Juan Antonio Flecha follows in fourth.

I noticed the other day that even Lance Armstrong doesn't believe cycling itself is enough to constitute a sport, so he's retired and taken up triathlon instead. Clever guy.

He's won two 70 mile triathlons already by the way, at aged 40

He was a triathlete before concentrating on cycling so maybe he always enjoyed it more. I suspect there wasn't, and isn't, as much money in triathlons. And probably the competition isn't as hard either - he can't win elite pro bike races any more.

He competes in cross-country mountain biking too I think.

Yes, he seems to be in it purely for the love of competing now.

As you may or may not have picked up by now I'm not a massive cycling fan, but I can't help but be in awe of what he's achieved. It's incredible.

Still, using a bike is cheating
