The problem is they totally overscore takedowns in MMA or at least American MMA ... you see it all the time ... the mandatory take down 10 seconds before the bell ... when the complete it, it always drives me mad ... You can control the octogon ... throw a lot more strikes ... but if some wrestler puts you on your ass a couple of times in one round you are swimming up stream in the eyes of the Judges

I don't think he's surprising anybody to be honest- not anybody who actually knows about MMA or even BJJ. He's been known for quite a long time, even with how young he still is.

He's just very slowly making his way up the ladder- not being rushed- not mouthing off.

I really like the guy, he's one of my favourite fighters and i'm not Icelandic!

that would definitely show who was the best fighter, rather than who had the best plan

McGregor looks ****ed because he took an elbow to the chin and I suspect he was carrying some injuries into that fight .... Mendes took this fight in 2 weeks notice ... that rarely works out well .. these fighters train 2 a day for 12 weeks leading up to the fight for good reason .. you need to be in top top nick to go 5 5 minute round

    Fantastic stuff from McGregor.

Don't think too many can begrudge him that victory last night.

One of the biggest stars in MMA. Fair play to him.

    Good win for McGregor.

Mendes fought the right fight (ground and pound) against McGregor and looked the better fighter for much of the fight as a result but fair play to McGregor for toughing it out and taking his chance when it came.

I wonder when he looks back at replays of the fight will Mendes regret his decision to go for the submission instead of just seeing out the round using what was already working to a tee for him.

Did think that McGregor sweetly got away from the sub attempt and it was a lovely shot that took the fight out of Mendes.

McGregor's ground game, or rather his lack of one at a higher level, was again highlighted though and no doubt Aldo with his quality takedown game will have been taking notes.

Aldo-McGregor is going to be very interesting though. Aldo does like to stand and strike so if he goes in with that it could well be a very exciting gun fight of a bout, but Aldo is the more well rounded of the two in terms of his all round game and is close to McGregor in terms of reach.

Would regard McGregor as the more accurate and cleaner striker of the two, and the more likely of the pair to land a one shot fight changer.

I don't think Mendes was gassed due to lack of training camp, it's been said many many times he's the best athlete at Alpha Male, and even then I don't think he would've been gassed in the first like Mendes seemed to be.

It was a combination of two things I think that ruined Mendes, the body shots from Conor and the Adrenaline Dump of fighting in such a massive fight, both I think where factors.

Mendes's plan on the ground actually wasn't a bad one, everytime he went to pass guard he gave Conor a chance of getting up, so he just stayed there and let off elbows which on another fighter may well have finished them, but Mcgregor has a ****ing hell of a chin, as well as a will to win, looked like he twisted his neck ****ing 180 degrees to get out of that choke

Will be interesting to see Aldo's strategy when they fight, if he decides to do his usual and stand with a Conor or if he decides to take him down, if he Chooses to stand then that will be an amazing fight.

    Oh, and Rory and Robbie

Great card, and one for the UFC that will have seen many people tuning in for the first time, brilliant advert for the sport.

Shame about the ****ty "fight kits"
