    The Tour of France

It's difficult to see past Contador for the top step on the podium. Andy Schleck hasn't shown any good form at all (and lost the Luxembourg road race yesterday to his brother) but I suppose we've got to hope he's been holding back. Even then he's likely to lose maybe a minute or more in the time trial.

The other contenders though look very well matched. Wiggins is in great form it seems, Evans now attacks, I'm not sure Basso's got it any more (perhaps something to do with not doping any more), Gadret will be good in the mountains but probably lose a lot in the time trial. Van Den Broeck might well come good and looked good in the Dauphine. Assuming the top two are in form though I can't see any of them really threatening them.

I think Gesink will be the main threat to them. He's a pure climber but he's learned to time trial in the last year.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

Are you going to follow it like a couple of years ago? Weather might be very good for the duration of the tour.

I think Schleck will do well, most of the times form prior to the race is irrelevant. I remember Hinault back in the days was never in particularly great shape but he was head and shoulders above the rest. Still think Contador will win it.
    Are we winning?

I shall be watching avidly on tele of course but I'm not going to it. I'm riding some of the mountains later in the summer though. Or at least I'm going to try to ride them.

Form isn't usually irrelevant but of course it can be. But Schleck was really bad in the Tour of Switzerland. His time trialling was woeful (although not as bad as his brother's) and he got repeatedly dropped on the climbs early in the race. Maybe he was tuning up though so like you say it doesn't prove he won't be competitive with Contador in the mountains. Again though he'll lose time in the ITT so he'll have to attack like he did last year.

The only concern for Contador is how much the Giro took out of him. Even so he was so dominant in that race he could almost afford a bad day - he really was in a different league from everyone else.

Andy Schleck reckons Contador might be strong enough to win the Giro/Tour double but his teammates won't be, whereas his teammates didn't ride the Giro. An interesting distinction.

Oh gawd, please don't bring that nonsense into this sport.

Of course people say all sorts of crap (as you know better than anyone) but maybe he really believes it, who's to say?

It is certainly true that the Leopard Tour team didn't ride the Giro, even before their sad and premature exit, whereas most, if not all (I haven't checked), of the Saxo Bank Tour team did.

I'm looking forward to it too, you can't beat working from home and watching La Grande Boucle.

It's going to be so tactical and no one knows how the new rules might affect how the teams fight for it. I can see Garmin putting up a very stiff challenge - if Farrar is on form then Hushovd is a hell of a rider to have as your leadout man.

But he ought to win it - he's the fastest road rider in the world.

Working? I just wrote the two Galibier stages into my diary - I'm not putting any work in for those days.

I'm probably gonna skip the first week and start really watching as soon as they start climbing, I always did that.

Contador got booed at the teams presentation yesterday. It looks like he's going to get a lot of abuse and so be under even more pressure.
