Why doesn't golf have any merits to warrant it a sport?

would you agree that olympic events are sports?

Would you also agree that the olympic comittee are more qualified than anyone to deem what is a sport?

Because the olympic comittee agree which is why it's back in the olympics baby

    you lose

also - the first line from WIKI

Golf is a precision club and ball sport

That's where you lost me. Their consideration is whether there are likely to be wealthy sponsors, which is probably why golf is in.

So why do the BBC, Sky Sports and all other media outlets see fit to include golf in their sports coverage?

          Because it's a sport.

Of course it's a (very dull) sport.

quoting wiki is clinging to straws mate

And as far as it comes to the olympic comittee they are only interested in money, the only organization more corrupt than FIFA, and golf is a game with a lot of money in it.

What to you is the difference between a game and a sport then I might ask? Here is my criteria to be judged a sport, and now you bring in the olympics, let's take a step back to see what the olympics were really made for. They where a contribute to (besides Zeus and Hera) the 3 gods of physical ability Hermes - speed, Hercules - strenght. Aphrodite - stamina and golf requires neither of those to be played.

Yes golf is a difficult game requiring skill, but that does not make it a sport. It's difficult being a perfect bowler and a good snooker player, but that does not make it a sport it merely makes it a difficult game. And I'm certain that if the money are good enough they could all make it to the olympics.

So let me ask again, what in your eyes is the difference between a game and a sport? To me it's the physical aspect testing either of the three mentioned.

so you don't think golf is physically challenging???

you burn more calories playing golf than a 10k run

no, I don't think it's physically challenging in any ways Anyone can walk the distance of 18 holes and that's even without the break every 100m

I have never gone a round of golf and afterwards thinking "blimey that was exhausting, had I walk one more hole I would have dropped dead". To me it has the physical challenge equilant to a walk in the forrest, it might consume calories but that hardly makes it physically challenging. Thinking alone burns calories, but that's hardly a sport in itself...

And I still wait for your answer to my question of what the difference between a game and a sport is in your opinion?

a sport is in activity that requires skill and/or a level of fitness and can be played for entertainment or competitively. It could be indvidual or team based (something which golf is both..)

Hard work and practice will improve you at sport. In sport, whilst luck can help you, you don't rely on it.

Golf is clearly a sport - it may not be physicaly exhausting but trying playing in a amateur competitive tournement such as for example a club championship, where you play two rounds in one day carrying your own clubs for roughly ten miles and, then swinging a golf club differently every shot....it takes it out of you. It's not just a case of easily swinging your arms - it takes effort.......decent golfers, not even talking pro's here, will be able to get their hand speed up to 90mph, putting unbelievable pressure on their shoulders, hips and legs for the body turn.

Also....golf out of all the "sports" i have played (football, cricket, tennis, badminton, rugby, hockey etc etc etc) is by far the toughest mentally, and it's the only sport i've played where arguably the better you get, the harder it gets

So, by that definition darts isn't a sport?

I've become rather apathetic about televised sport over the past couple of years. Besides football, I'll still watch big events such as the World Snooker Championships, big rugby games, golf and tennis majors, but I often peel myself off the couch after watching three or fours sport feeling like I've wasted my day. Could be more to do with my increased disdain for television than said sports though.

                              What about their fitness levels?

Most darts players look like they've just eaten the entire contents of an all you can eat Chinese buffet.

by that definition all board games are a sport... you are basically just defining sports and games as the same.

Golf requires a lot of skill and sure also something mentally on the highest level, but so does many computer games...
