Vermillion is spot on in what he said about the gloves with regards to the pro ranks.

What you may be thinking about with regards to heavier gloves are the glove weights for amateur boxing. Heavier gloves are used there so that there is less risk of trauma/injury to the generally younger fighters that make up the unpaid ranks.

Sparring and general training gloves are also much heavier than fight gloves for the pro ranks. The bigger you are the heavier the glove (although in the case of exceptionally heavy hitters a lighter fighter may use a heavier glove than normal for his weight when sparring).

What are peoples thoughts on Roy Jones Jr?

Does his post Ruiz career affect his overall legacy?

He went on too long, simple as that really. It was a bit sad, but I don't think it tainted how talented he was at his peak.

Nope I don't think it affected his legacy any more than Ali staying in the game too long affected his legacy.

At his peak Roy Jones jnr was a world class talent, and I think a peak RJJ would have had the tools to excel in any era.

I had an argument with a Welsh lad at work the other week that peak RJJ would've beat Calzaghe, he wasn't having none of it.

              He would've though.

The Supermiddle RJJ of the Toney fight against a prime Calzaghe would have been one hell of a fight.

Would agree with you. Peak Jones jnr was a special fighter. Peak Calzaghe was damn good, but RJJ at his best was world class and a joy to watch.

If I had access to a time machine then my dream pairing would probably be peak Hagler vs peak Monzon, but the idea of dropping James Toney and Roy Jones jnr into a middleweight four way with those two is mouth watering.

Winner of that little tournament could then go on to take on Sugar Ray Robinson

I started watching some HW boxing videos and it reminded me of when it used to be on the TV, especially the Bruno, Lewis, Watson, Benn and Eubank and that little **** Prince Nasim (I think?) fights.
