What you may be thinking about with regards to heavier gloves are the glove weights for amateur boxing. Heavier gloves are used there so that there is less risk of trauma/injury to the generally younger fighters that make up the unpaid ranks.
Sparring and general training gloves are also much heavier than fight gloves for the pro ranks. The bigger you are the heavier the glove (although in the case of exceptionally heavy hitters a lighter fighter may use a heavier glove than normal for his weight when sparring).
