Muhammad Ali was said to be close to death on Friday night as his family gathered at his bedside.

There were reports in the US that the boxing legend was on a life support machine and "barely breathing".

The 74-year-old was taken to hospital in Phoenix, Arizona on Thursday to be treated for a respiratory issue.

Bob Gunnell, the family spokesman, told the Louisville Courier-Journal that Ali's stay in a Phoenix-area hospital was expected to be brief, but family sources reportedly said that his condition was very serious.

"It's extraordinarily grave. It's a matter of hours," a source close to the family told Reuters.

Ali has been treated in hospital several times in recent years, most recently in early 2015 when he was treated for a severe urinary tract infection initially diagnosed as pneumonia.

US gossip site Radar Online said they had been told the former heavyweight champion was barely breathing.

“He needs every bit of fight he’s got left to survive,” a source told the site.

“Doctors are telling the family that it likely won’t be long until he passes away.”

Diagnosed with Parkinson’s over 30 years ago, Ali has looked increasingly frail in public appearances, including in April when was seen hunched over and wearing sunglasses at the annual Celebrity Fight Night dinner in Phoenix, which raises funds for treatment of Parkinson's.

His last formal public appearance before that was in October when he appeared at the Sports Illustrated tribute to him, held at the Muhammad Ali Center in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky.

His doctor, Abraham Lieberman, said he could not discuss his condition.

"I can't really say much more than what's in the papers," he said.

An iconic figure who at one point was perhaps the most recognised person in the world, Ali has nine children by four different wives and two other relationships. The sporting superstar has lived quietly in the Phoenix area with his fourth wife, Lonnie, whom he married in 1986.

Rest easy Champ. Not only did you live out your own life being known as The Greatest, your legacy will continue to live out in the lives of others long after you are gone.

"I ain't draft dodging. I ain't burning no flag. I ain't running to Canada. I'm staying right here. You want to send me to jail? Fine, you go right ahead. I've been in jail for 400 years. I could be there for 4 or 5 more, but I ain't going no 10,000 miles to help murder and kill other poor people. If I want to die, I'll die right here, right now, fightin' you, if I want to die. You my enemy, not no Chinese, no Vietcong, no Japanese. You my opposer when I want freedom. You my opposer when I want justice. You my opposer when I want equality. Want me to go somewhere and fight for you? You won't even stand up for me right here in America, for my rights and my religious beliefs. You won't even stand up for my right here at home."

                  RIP
Had the honour of meeting him in 1993 when he was helping to promote Howard Bingham's book.

I don't think it's possible we will ever see another man like Ali. He was a phenomenon. We are lucky to have experienced his like, who he was and what he stood for.

                      He even knew it himself.

It seems an appropriate time to watch 'When we were Kings' again. Also tempted to dog out old copy of 'the Fight' by Norman Mailer to remind myself of how great Ali truly was.

Not just the greatest boxer, not just the greatest sportsman, but probably one of the greatest people to have lived, certainly in modern times....a top class sportsman, a top class entertainer and a top class human being. RIP

Can't really add to much that has already been said. He truly was the greatest not only sportsman but also as a human being. Genuinely one of the nicest, charismatic people to have lived.

It's such as shame that he didn't quit before he did the damage. The world didn't lose Ali today the world lost Ali when his illness took hold.

                                RIP champ.
