if we bat towards lunch, then one of their lot puts a shift in with a couple staying with him, the draw is still on

I can't see them batting for nearly 2 days on a pitch that is going to turn. Root might even get a couple.

re all this crowing about Compton.

Nobody was saying Root should be dropped. He could have been scoring runs at number 6 and Compton could have been piling on the runs at the top of the innings. Root is a fantastic player but there are still questions about him against the new ball, for example, he should have been out early in this innings if Haddin had been awake and he was constantly playing and missing in the first 10 overs. Great knock in the end though.

I think Bairstow is rubbish, he's a walking wicket. Maybe he'll prove me wrong, but I think our batting lineup would have been stronger with Compo up top and Root at 6. Plus it was enormously unfair of the selectors to drop Compo. He had two bad tests, went away, did what they asked him to do and yet they still dropped him. It's done now though and it would be really unfair on Root to keep moving him about the order.

We should declare in the morning. Pointless batting on. They are already demoralised and beaten into the ground. Personally I would have stuck them in for half an hour this evening.

Bairstow shouldn't be there. Don't see the point in playing Compton. Would rather blood in a youngster than give time to a relatively inexperienced 30 year old.

English sport is in rude health....England hammering the Aussies, Westwood leading The Open going into the last round and Andy Murray winning Wimbledon

Rightly or wrongly I think Compton's age is going against him. Even at 30 they are looking to the fact he will only have another four or five years.

Root and Bairstow could play for a good ten to fifteen years in England colours.

I think Bairstow can be a decent player, much less accomplished than Root but a player who will improve with playing international cricket like Bell.

I was too distracted by the amusing assertion bthat Aus could bat out 2 days

Bairstow won't be playing for England this time next year, nevermind in 10 years. Hope I'm wrong though.

He has got a fair bit going for him. So powerful and looks to score all the time. Brutal through the offside. Just has that glaring deficiency with the straight ball, which he can and will obviously work on.
