I do. Thats why I only do 40 odd miles and not 300.Originally posted by Alex View PostHave you not got a car?
Plus I've got a shocking metabolism, bad knees so can't play footy or cycle anymore and a teeny, tiny bit of OCD (which I think probably helps as a runner)
A lot of people run a race to see who is fastest. I run to see who has the most guts, who can punish himself into exhausting pace, and then at the end, punish himself even more.

I would have thought so, unless you are running on sand. Road running is notoriously bad on the knees.Originally posted by Alex View PostRunning is just one of those things I could never get. Fair play to anyone that can achieve more than 1 mile before getting bored.
Question though, if you have bad Knees, why is running good? I would have thought it would kill them?

Alls I have done is started exercising every other day and eating healthy foods. Ive not had a single processed meal since December and the difference to how I feel is amazing. Lots of fruit, veg, fish and wholegrain foods. 2 tablespoons of Flaxseed per day on my porridge or stir fry. I feel a million times better and the more weight Ive lost the quicker I can run. I still have the odd bar of chocolate, chinese, bottle of wine (every other weekend as a rule) but I don't beat myself up about it. Next day I just get up and carry on as I have been.
It's taken loads of faddy diets and lapsed gym memberships to make me realise it doesn't have to be that hard or that extreme, I don't have to be starving ever and I can even enjoy it!RAFA! RAFAEL! RAFA! RAFAEL! RAFA! RAFAEL! RAFAEL BENITEZ!

Yeah, its bizarre Matt. I think a lot of it is to do with the way I run. When I was on my heels I think a lot of impact was on joints but since I switched it has been a revelation. No pain, nothing.Originally posted by Mattshark View PostI would have thought so, unless you are running on sand. Road running is notoriously bad on the knees.
Treadmills are different though. I struggle to keep my form which pushes me on to my heels and bang goes the knee. I suppose that's why I'm such a stong advocate of forefoot striking and minimalist running shoes

You do not need to make major changes to your diet, in fact temporary switches to diets are not a positive thing. Best thing you can do is to keep your diet to around 2000kcal a day and no more than about 60g of fat, unnsaturated is better than saturated and add 30mins of exercise, even if it is just walking.
Britta water filters have no health benefits as your water is already filtered, they are all about taste and nothing more, they are really only needed if you live in an area with hard water.
Kris your PT is unlikely to be an expect on dietary advice and he is wrong about being hyperhydrated as that can removed needed electrolytes from the body which can cause a variety of issues.
Kris there is no evidence linking normal caffeine consumption to any adrenal issues, the only real concern with caffeine should be if you have high blood pressure.
Full fat milk is only 4% fat, it is not an issue unless you consume a great deal of it.
Carbohydrates, fats and sugars are all needed by your body if you balance your diet correctly and don't over eat then you should have no issues.
The internet is full of **** for the most part, you are better off getting information from the NHS site ahead of anywhere else.
Cereals are fine, especially in the morning.
Love it Matt. You open with a statement telling everyone to dismiss nutritionists, then proceed to give out your own unqualified dietary advice. I was under the impression that you're a marine biologist? You're a dietician as well?
The PT I know is not an expert but takes advice on nutrition from one of the UK's leading fat loss experts. He's been a consultant on fat loss related tv shows. In short, he knows his ****. I'll take his advice over yours, but thanks anyway
Ultimately, losing weight and getting fit isn't rocket science. Eat more vegetables and less ****. Excercise 3 times a week. You'll lose weight and get fitter.K ris90210

It is not my unqualified advice, it based on real dietary science and some general science (like the filter nonsense, the hydration nonsense and the incorrect information regarding caffeine)Originally posted by kris90210 View Post

Who cares, he is factually wrong. Just sounds like he picked up stuff from the internet rather than any real science. Also Gillian McKeith has been on weight loss related TV shows.Last edited by Mattshark; 25-04-12, 05:37 PM.

Well I'm certainly not qualified to argue on his behalf. I've no problem admitting that. But both of these individuals take their jobs very seriously, and I'm sure they are extremely well read on the subject. It would be like one of them telling you you were wrong about the life expectancy of a dolphin.Originally posted by Mattshark View PostIt is not my unqualified advice, it based on real dietary science and some general science (like the filter nonsense, the hydration nonsense and the incorrect information regarding caffeine)

He is a PT, he is not a dietitian, the two things are extremely different. I'd gladly take his advice on exercise, he food advise is contrary to science though.Originally posted by kris90210 View PostWell I'm certainly not qualified to argue on his behalf.
