Take glucosamine sulphate for me joints- and fish oils. But that sounds like an injury not wear & tear- mebbe best rest it a week of 2 then have a Physio look at it of it ain't improving.
    3rd place. Worst champions ever.

I'back and I'm off the bottom

It's been three weeks of hell with some mystery virus (suspected glandular fever) but I finally felt in good enough shape to run again. It's been a **** year really in terms of personal health and family health so I'm hoping for a clear run now until the end of the year.

It feels good to run again , same again on Thursday.

          Welcome back Alex

I'm doing the Liverpool Half in March too.

You effectively put me mid-table now too

            Thanks mate.

Thought I better get off my arse and do something. Itll help with my continued battle to reduce my weight.

            4st down so far

Anyway. What is a good time for a first Half Marathon? I was thinking something like 2.15?

Im not gonna kill myself to do it in a certain time though. Getting round is the first priority.

I wouldn't even entertain a time for now. I under-trained for my last one and did it in 2.15. But for your first one I'd say 2.30 is a more realistic aim given the pace you normally run at.

Just aim to enjoy it and get to the finish line. Times are bollocks.

I'd agree with that. Don't worry about a time for your first half marathon. Just aim to finish and enjoy the experience particularly if their are spectators. Whatever time it is, your first attempt will be a pb. You can then aim to improve if you choose to do another.

5 months is good enough time to prepare though, right?

Im going to adopt an approach of smaller runs during the week, and a longer run on Sundays.

Not totally sure on distances, probably keep them small to begin with. 5k and under, then something like 8/10k on Sundays. Sort of push myself to finish in any time.

Wasn't your 'turn up and run' half more like 2:20?

I remember benchmarking myself against an under-trained Pablo when I ran mine. You ran it in extremely hot conditions though didn't you?

Yeah I can't remember the exact time but I think it was 2hrs 20. Rubbish. I'll never run a worse one than that. To be fair I'd barely ran in the month leading up to it. It's been a **** year (injury, family bereavements etc.) and that one was in scorching sun too. I'm terrible at running in the heat.

I'm really going to try and go for this one in March. Weather shouldn't be a problem and I'm more than overdue an eventful few months running!

I feel great after my first run back yesterday so I will be back out tomorrow. I know it's getting dark and grim but I actually find I run better in this kind of weather. I'm hoping to get some decent winter training in again this year.

A lot of people run a race to see who is fastest. I run to see who has the most guts, who can punish himself into exhausting pace, and then at the end, punish himself even more.
