Sounds awful. When mine was at it's worst walking was absolute agony. I could barely move. Had to sit down using my arms without bending my legs etc. It's such a slow healer too that area of the foot, as it gets barely any blood supply.

I find now if I keep my ankles moving after exercise they are usually ok, but if I rest them too much then the next time I get up I can hardly walk

Everyone I run with has injuries too. I've long since came to realise running is terrible for your body, far too much impact.

I've never been stood on a start line and heard someone say i'm injury free. You ask someone how they feel and it'll be - i've been fighting a cold, got a little niggle, coming back from injury....

Running is amazing for the body it's just you need to train for yourself. A lot of people pound the pavement or the running machines, that sends a lot of shock up your legs. Also not having the correct footwear can be really damaging.

My dad has bad knees but the doctor said the benefits of running far outweigh the negatives.

What's the story with the achilles stuff? Do you guys stretch them before you go out? I've posted before that I immediately got achilles tendonitis once went over a certain distance but stretching before running has sorted it out completely.

I only started doing this running lark aged 46 .. I pretty soon got calf, achilles & heel/foot injuries. I went to a podiatrist and I now use orthotic inserts all the time combined with recommended footwear to correct my rolling feet - I get far less injuries from running. If you are suffering from repeat injuries sometimes its worthwhile going to the pro to try sort them out !

Definitely. Think of your muscles like blue tac, if you pull it apart quickly it snaps, but if you roll it around in your hand for a bit and get it warm it stretches when you try to pull it apart - same thing with your muscles.

I've moved to dynamic stretching before running and it's worked wonders for my calves and helps me run for longer. Instead of static stretching before the run, get out and stretch while you run, include it in the warm up. Google 'dynamic stretching' for some good exercises. You look a bit of a tit so i usually do it around the park before i head off!

              Chest and shoulder DOMS today

On the plus side I had a look back at this time last year and I've gained almost 10kg of muscle since then and it's noticable now in my upper body. Wife loves it
              Cheers

It's a great feeling when you get back to it after a break regardless of soreness.

Yeah, definitely. Makes me wonder why I left it so long.

Still, I have new batteries for the head torch and work is calming down, so no excuses.

A question to you running fellas. I will be resuming training again Monday. Running isnt my thing (unless it a sport that involves chasing a ball) However, I will by clocking up the km's on an eliptical training machine. Is it acceptable to log my km's in this thread?

I'd have no problem with that - it's not really a competition more of a free-for-all / friendly league kinder thing - Just for motivation really!

I've done next to no exercise this year but have just signed up to the Yeovil Santa run on December 14th. It's a 4km park run and I need to get back into shape ASAP.
