It no doubt is. It's called self medicating and it's one of the most destructive methods of coping with depression. It gets in a vicous cycle. You drink, you black out, you no longer hurt, the drink sinks you further into guilt and depression, so you drink, you.....

The drink makes the illness worse and the illness makes the drink worse.

I don't hold this against him. I've been there myself, many years ago. But to go back to that cycle after escaping it, knowing what it will do to those around you, that's what I find hard to understand. But anyways....

Some people will just never understand what a traumatic event can do to some people with poor wiring (or even good wiring) until it happens to them.

A lot of people with alcoholism are using it to try and escape the real problems and this leads to more serious problems.
too easy for someone psyciatrist to say your in depression etc etc
i think its lost on some people how easy and covenient it is to say or make out your mad to cover being what you really are

Granted he's made bad mistakes - I can only assume the holier-than-thou ****ers in this thread queuing up to condemn Gascoigne have never ****ed anything up in their perfect lives.

The part where he says he thinks that being abused as a child won't **** you up is unbelievable.

Actually, that's not necessarily true. There are a lot of people who have abused drugs to the point where it is their fault. Gazza has abused drugs for decades.
Having said that, aportioning blame is pointless, Gazza should be helped and the media should stop this ****in freak show and stop leeching off this man for a ****in second of his life.

Of course certain drugs don't help, mainly hash but alcohol won't **** up your chemical balance(permanently).

You are right, drugs are the main cause but what I should have said is that people don't realise what can happen withn drugs and when it ****s you it's usually permanent to some degree
