It can, but Gazza has done a lot more than alcohol in his time

Either way, it's not important. Man deserves privacy and help

Aside from his mental illness, Gazza was also an extremely trusting and personable character who wanted everyone to be his best mate. When he was at Everton he would regularly give some of the lads from my school lifts home (with NO ulterior motive, before the same tedious jokes fly out) and was even signing 20 pound notes for kids outside the training ground.

This aspect of his persona was exploited by innumerable hangers-on and manipulative parasites who bled him of his money and his untold potential as a footballer. This is not to excuse all of his behaviour, but anyone who hasn't any sympathy whatsoever for a man who clearly has mental problems and spends every day wishing he could re-do everything he ****ed up is a bit cold.

everyone has problems - some make more of them than others
No one has called him a hero, a talent yes - a wasted talent at that. Gazza was a gifted footballer, sadly he didn't know how to cope with the fame and worse he didn't know how to cope when his star faded either. I feel sorry for the bloke and am somewhat amazed by some of the vitriol thrown at him on here.

think you mis understand me fella tbh
i agree he was a talented player but i cant find it in me to feel sorry for a fella who has done the things we all know he has
why do you think his kids shun him ? not because they feel sorry for him and his "illness" but for the things he has done to thier mum - many in front of them.
its by no means black and white but i didnt feel for george best who many saw as a cunt either.
wasted talent yes feel sorry for not me but those who do ok just maybe put yourselves in the role of watching your dad batter your mum (not that mine did )and see why not everyone pitys poor old gazza

Some people just don't know how to deal with fame and it ****s them up - in the world of celebrity there have been plenty and plenty worse than Gascoigne, some get through it, some don't.

No one is condoning Gascoigne for beating up his wife and it's easy to claim insanity as a defense sometimes but he is clearly ****ed up and suffering which is something you don't seem capable of understanding. If you want a discussion on it go and read up on mental illness and come back. Quotes like the one below are just ignorant.

"its like saying you were abused as a kid and so your ****ed up - its utter ****e"

i don't mean the guy any harm, I hope he get's himself better, I really do.

What I can't accept is the selective memory of some people. Calling him a "legend" and "genius" is laughable. He lost the right to be called such things when he (a professional athlete) beat the **** out of his wife. A headbutt on one occasion, Nice! And then he calls in the lawyers to stop her telling the story of our national hero becoming a wife beating drunk. ****ing. Coward.

It's sad when any person falls mentally ill, for whatever reason. But the guy has had more money and opportunity to get better than most of those who become mentally ill.

To forget all is wrongs is foolish. IMO. Next we'll be calling Jozef Fritzel a "superb engineer" or a "founding father of underground living". Mentally ill? Or only when it suits?

I suppose when it's becoming painfully obvious to even yourself that you're on a clueless rant it's best just to try and deny everything.
