So you reckon he's signing on the basis of 'ifs' in a world cup year? I doubt it but you never know.

And no its clearly not our last 10m but it's hardly a priority position to be spending a large sum of our budget on if Pepe is staying.

We haven't even got European games to give them all a fair chance. If he's coming he's coming because he's been told he'll be no 1 IMO. and that means Pepes off.

If you listen to people (on here) slating Jones then you'd conclude that we have a Sunday league keeper as backup, so it should be a pretty high priority. It's a pretty big gamble that could derail our season to only have one proper keeper. I expect he's coming here either because he thinks Pepe is going or because he thinks he's a top class keeper who can get first team action. Either way, the more good players the merrier.

No one know how much we can spend. The new TV deal should mean that £50m+ net should be possible but it is just a guess, no one can now the answer yet because FSG themselves probably don't know.

If Reina is sold then we would need to spend a few millions on another keeper. What would happen if Mignolet get injured and ruled out a few months? That is a gamble we can't afford to do.

Jones as first choice a few months would mean season over.

The more good players the better is obvious. But good players won't sit on the bench indefinitely so with goalkeepers it's tricky because you usually have 1 who always plays and 1 who doesn't. I can't see Pepe or Mignolet being happy with the backup role.

Sure. One will cement their place and the other will get fed up and eventually leave. Then we replace them and the new guy puts pressure on the remaining one. And repeat....

We'll just have to wait and see what happens. I'd expect nothing less than Brendan to talk about competition for keepers etc etc, at this stage of the transfer window, but reading between the lines, it's an awkward situation IMO.
Pepe would crawl over broken glass to get his move to Barca, but with Valdes sticking around (not too mention Ter Stegen musings), he may not get what he wants.
Brendan is probably just looking after his own concerns by bringing in a decent up and coming keeper, but switching to a new keeper is rarely immediately successful. If not now, Pepe will be moved on eventually.

I don't think one will get the chance to get fed up is all I've been saying, I think when the windows closes Pepe will be gone. There aren't many clubs in the world that have an excellent goalkeeper willing to play backup, I can't think of any, they all have a no 1 and a no 2 they hope they won't have to use much, Jones is that for us

I wouldn't be surprised if Pepe leaves next season and we're just trailing Mignolet so that others don't get him, which could potentially be pretty shrewd business.

Say he has another decent season, Mignolet's value will go up again possibly in the region of Begovic's value. Is it possible that the board have looked at this and come to the conclusion its better to spend £10 million now, rather than 15-17 the season after?

I understand that Mignolet wants to be in the Belgium setup for the World Cup and by coming here to sit on the bench, he's decreasing his chances of playing in that World Cup. And this is the only thing that doesn't make sense about the transfer.

Then again, maybe we have more money available than we let on after numerous years of getting bent over by other teams for their players...

It seems like Pepe may well be off, but I just think the move for mignolet would be good either way.

I think Pepe is clearly looking at the situation at Barcelona I think he will go there in the next year whether it is this summer, next summer or in the January window I think depends on the games that are being played between Barcelona, us and Pepe. I guess Barca are trying to get the price down and we are seeing Mignolet as Pepe's replacement but want to get him signed up before Pepe is sold so we don't get screwed on the price (once Pepe is sold).

A lot of people are saying Mignolet wouldn't be coming here if he weren't assured of a place. He may have been told that Pepe is leaving (if that is what the club believe will happen) and that he will be first choice, but if Barcelona don't come in for Pepe, then after the window closes everyone has to live with the situation as it is, and the assurances that Mignolet may have been given will count for nothing.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Same risk as we've had every season since Jones was bought, any teams first choice keeper gets injured and their chances of doing well nose dive.

As for the money we have, any increase coming in is balanced by the fact we already have a loss on the books from last seasons accounts to cover for FFP purposes so some of it will be covering that.

I've no problem signing Mignolet but I'd rather Begovic or Pepe staying as 1st choice.I just don't think we'll be going through the current season with Reina/Mignolet/Jones as our keepers as people seem to think,One of those will be gone and I can't see it being Jones.I'd be happy to be wrong on that cos obviously the squad will be stronger if it is.
