I'm hoping the 100K a week off the wage bill is going to be taken by someone who will equally command that large a wage but in an attacking position.

I'm sure Mignolet earns a weekly wage too.

Okay, the remaining 60K goes to a quality attacker.

@TonyBarretTimes @mikejgirling but then you still have the problem of being beholden to the whim of Barca & Valdes. Could u accept that?

            @DanKennett @mikejgirling That's not the situation.
So he reckons Pepe to Barca is not an issue ?

The big issue I have here, is not the fact wether pepe stays or goes on loan or permanent sell...but the fact that BR made a big point out of saying a few weeks ago that Mignolet was bought as competition for, as opposed to replacing Pepe...now that is fully turned around...What are we all to think about Rodgers' credibility now?

It certainly makes me wonder about his Suarez statement a few days ago...

basically, it's going to be hard to believe anything he says from now on....

Pepe to Barca is nice football chatter, irrespective of whether there was any truth in it. It makes for interesting discussion, like most speculation. At the end of the day we don't know much about a lot of things.

The only thing I've found odd about this situation was the reasoning of some fans into believing that we'd have both Mignolet and Reina on the books going into the season.
                    Could never understand that.

So Brendan's statement about two top tier keepers etc etc, always came across as 'manager speak', which was probably the best way to handle the situation. Not sure what else he could say really so as not to surrender any possible upper hand in negotiations for Reina's exit. Pepe has probably found his options limited, certainly with regard to a move back home, so the Napoli option is probably for the best even if they're not willing to buy right now.

Bottom line is Brendan has made his keeper decision and its time to accept it and get behind both men concerned.

Rodgers would probably have liked to have competition and have them both if he had his way.

Perhaps Pepe has said he wants to go, realises that as we've bought in another keeper his position isn't safe and with it being WC year he wants to make sure he's playing first team football.

You never know how things will work out. If Mignolet comes in does well and plays every game the £5m or so saved in Reina's wages will look like a good move, however if he doesn't do well or gets injured and that costs us a CL place it would prove to be a foolish decision that could have cost us £40m. It's a gamble and I guess we won't know whether it has paid off until the end of the season.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

and Messi available on the bench if things aren't going our way.

Sure, who wouldn't in imaginary football land. 'Hopefully top-tier' and Brad Jones-level is about the most even the top sides can expect to have available to them in their first team squads.

With our prickly finances, the purchase of Mignolet (and Reina still being a first XI level keeper) is only gonna mean one thing

Whatever the reason for the replacing of Mignolet with Pepe, one thing is definite, there is no way we could go into the season with a 2nd choice keeper on over 100k a week.

The loan may not please people but it makes sense to me.

I am sure we would have just like to sell him and get the money back from Mignolet but since nobody has come in for him we had to loan him. Save 5.5 mill on wages (reported figures) and if we get 5mill + in summer then we have theoretically received 10.5mill for him.

Obviously it would be better to sell now and get transfer fee plus wage saving but you need a buyer for that to happen.

Yeah, I have no issues with the loan deal either tbh. Pepe was never going to sit on the bench for us this season
