@TonyBarretTimes: Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that his primary reason for allowing Pepe Reina to join Napoli on loan is financial.

@TonyBarretTimes: Rodgers: “Financially it is something we needed to look at,” he said. “Because obviously otherwise you wouldn’t move on a top goalkeeper."

This is a very complicated situation with a number of variables and I think there is always a risk involved whatever decision was taken.

Given Pepe’s stature, his wages, and a limited number of clubs who can match his wages /whom he was willing to consider – this was never going to be easy.

I guess there are two issues which people have. First is the fact that a great servant of our club is leaving and the second is LFC not receiving any transfer payment for it.

Regarding the first while I do think Pepe’s loss of form is exaggerated, there is a strong possibility that this was a decision which our management and Pepe are in agreement with. Given the occasional reference in the media to Pepe’s wages I think our management felt that in his current form he is not worth 100K plus wages. I don’t 100% agree with the logic but I see the rationality of that. From Pepe’s side also moving to a new environment might also be the kick he needs to climb a level or two in form.

Regarding the second, irrespective of his importance to us, we were never going to get a large transfer fee for a 30 year old goalkeeper who is on 100K plus in wages. There are very few clubs who will be willing to do that and all of them appear to have a first choice goalkeeper on their books. We were going to get 4-8 million max.

Given Pepe’s attitude, commitment, passion, professionalism, and his spotless service to us over the last seven years I don’t think we should be too worried about how much we get back from his sale. One of the best signings in the history of the club irrespective of whether we get 5m, 10m, 15m.

He is the best goalkeeper I have ever seen at Liverpool and I hope he regains his past form wherever he goes, wins a lot of medals ( as long as does not move to a club in England) and achieves his professional ambitions. Thank you Pepe!!!!!!

Time to get a new avataar I guess

No surprises there even though BR recently said that Mignolet was brought in to provide competition.

I wouldn't read too much into Br's quote about this entire situation mate. It was a very complicated situation and there was nothing else he could have said at that point.

He could have said a lot else tbh. I believe him because under FSG this is the way things are.

And every other club in the world. Does anyone out there even have a back up keeper on 50k a week let alone 100k?

Man Utd? Chelsea? Real Madrid maybe.

For me the point is we should have sold him not loaned him.

Why should he show his cards to every Tom dick and Harry, blaming BR for every little decision is getting very boring. People want us to progress, yet most decisions he makes are scrutinised and or criticised. I'm glad we have a manager who has the balls to make the big decisions. If you don't take risks you won't go anywhere. And in BR's case you can be sure the are very well calculated risks.

I agree, Rodgers has replaced a great goalkeeper with another top quality goalkeeper. I guess he knew that he needed to act quickly and he did. I'm not convinced that loaning Reina is a great idea, but these things are not straightforward. I don't blame BR or the club for this situation, I think we've handled it really well.

Top marks. The fact is we know **** all about the financial arrangement and until we do, we're just winding ourselves up over it.

Gutted to see Pepe going. That's 2 huge characters we've lost over the summer, Carra and Pepe.

It was inevitable when we bought SM, obviously we would have preferred to sell rather than loan but we don't know what has happened behind the scenes.

Had a quick look back on this thread and its on page 15 where people starting questioning Pepe someone even said he had been off for 18 months and this was August, I think he has wanted to leave for a while but has felt loyalty towards the club/city and thats affected his performance, yes you can feel loyal/love for a club and still want to leave
                            RIP IRWT post/rant, best ever

if barca would have called him he would have gone running, leaving us scrambling to get a decent keeper in. we needed to move on and we should have sm as our number 1 for the next 4 years or more,

the loan isnt ideal, but at least we will not be left hanging wondering if/when pepe jumps. it needed to be sorted.
removing all the weak links makes us stronger

too many gutless players, no beef or desire. pussies everywhere... sack them all.
