Nah he didnt, he said "we havent discussed it further" or something regarding Napoli's offer then the mirror twisted that in to Rodgers saying we wont let him go on loan.

Yep.....nothing surprising there. Reina waited for Barca, Barca in the end didn't shoot their load, Rodgers was, rightly, unable to dick about on a 'will he, won't he' and brought in someone who he hopes will improve the team.

That said I'm pretty sure Rodgers/the club definitely said Mignolet was signed as competition for Reina. So much bull**** in football. I mean, no-one believed that but they treat us with contempt. I don't just mean Rodgers/LFC - all football clubs and managers do it. Sick of it. Just be open and honest FFS. All the cloak and dagger bull****...I'm sick of it.

Here's what I think, all based on guesses perhaps but at least that's keeping in the spirit of the thread

1. We were hoping that we'd be able to sell Reina to Barcelona, and he really wanted to go there so it was win-win for both parties. For us - age and wages were an issue (rightly or wrongly).

2. Valdes put a spanner in the works there.

3. We could have persisted with Reina, but we really rated Mignolet and didn't want the opportunity to sign him go by and lose him to someone else, so we did that deal regardless.

4. Reina has made it clear that he would not move permanently to anyone but Barcelona, and that was moot as no one else bid for him anyway.

5. Barcelona have told him/us they'll buy him next summer.

6. Rather than sit on the bench with us, Reina agreed to be re-united with Rafa at Napoli for this season.

7. We get a loan fee which covers his wages, and then a transfer fee next summer when he moves to Barca.

8. Mignolet excels this season and everyone realises what a masterstroke it all was

Yeah, but at the time he said that we hadn't got an offer for Reina from Napoli or anywhere else, so there was a serious risk he was going to end up staying. In which case you can't demotivate him by saying Mignolet is the new No.1, or Mignolet by saying Reina remains no.1. We might have all known it was bull****, but I can't imagine him or any other manager saying anything different given the circumstances.

I think the club has handled it really well to be honest. I like the fact that there's a hint of treating Reina with lots of respect and trying to do what's best for him given the years of service he's given us too (even if it was really pure business sense that was driving it). I hope it all works out for Reina now and he gets his move to Barca next summer.

Only problem with this is that we are £9m down. Yes, we'll save on weekly wages and hopefully we'll get a loan fee, but surely we should've had some confirmation from Barca before doing the Mignolet deal?
