The problem is FIFA dont define some kind of criteria for the bidding nations. It's all well and good getting technical and commercial reports done etc but what's the point if they're just going to get ignored. There's no doubting England could have put on a great World Cup but i think the bigwigs at FIFA had pretty much made up their mind as to where they wanted to hold it.
The whole process is inherently flawed and to hold the vote for 2022 at the same time was bordering on the farcical. I have a feeling the whole thing was engineered to ensure they got the decisions they wanted.
I think taking the World Cup to Russia and Qatar is a brave move and may well turn out to be for the good of the game and spread it even further. However, i think the reasons for taking it there are entirely motivated by greed rather than from a philanthropic standpoint.
I'd have preferred it if they'd just announced where they were going to hold it rather than have this bizarre event/conference/media circus /bribe, schmooze and grovel fest.
