i honestly don't see whether or not downing was a fan's first choice before he came is relevant.

The point is, where were all these people, who are lauding him as such a great signing, before we were linked? Nobody thought he was great or wanted to sign him then, but now that we've signed him....

just because nobody thought of him, and he's not a glamorous player, then it's not possible for us to be happy that he seems to be settling in well and doing a job? obviously somebody at the club rates him 20 million worth, so i'm not sure that a bunch of fans opinions given with their heads in the clouds is all that relevant to the fact that downing has done well, and is getting praise.

I have to agree with the Hog here, what difference does it make?

a) Why does it matter what any fan thought before we signed him?

b) Now that we have signed him, what’s wrong with fans appreciating what he adds to the team?

Ok then, if I say that I did want to sign him as did my million Liverpool supporting friends that you conveniently don't know, does that make him a better player?

I quite agree - he was decent but not great before we signed him and that's what he still is - hence why none of us were crying out for him to be signed.

He's a decent to good player, but not great and IMO, from watching his career, he isnt of the calibre required to take us into the top four. If he develops into a great player and helps us into the top four, then great - that's what we all want.

I cant predict the future, but from what i've seen of him, he isnt all that or anything special. You'll notice that fans generally pick out top quality players, when deciding who they want their club to sign - nobody was picking out Downing. It's not as if he's obscure or none of us had seen enough of him to judge - we had. We just, as a collective, didnt think he was that great, enough for us to want him signed.

Now, all of a sudden, he's just what we need.

I dont buy it, but each to their own. Why does it matter whether or not i think he's great? If people think he's great, then cool, it's their perogative. I dont - and that's mine.
