true, but he isn't as quick as Suarez, isn't as prolific as Torres was and isn't as skilfull as Barnes used to be. May be time to cut our losses......

the chances are caroll will be laying off more goals for the others than he'll score himself,as well as making more space.

I've no problem with that, don't really care if the goals are spread around as long as they're going in

defo, its better to have 6 players scoring regular, than having our hopes stuck on 2 players.

My issues with him are with his technique and his movement, these so far to me have been poor.

Maybe he could become a £35m centre back, he's got the physical attributes.

You should be on Sky instead of Neville.

Yeah possibly but would the player want to sign? I'm not at all sure many would.
                      .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

The owners would not have sanctioned the sale of Torres without a replacement, for me that's clear. It would have been political suicide. It was towards the end of the January transfer window which gave little time to make the deals happen.

Not many strikers would have been available in January and possibly Carroll was already on our radar as a young English striker so we went for him.

I'm sure negotiations for the sale of Torres and purchase of Carroll must have been going on in tandem because they were tied together and everything had to move fast. One would not have happened without the other.

Since Torres had handed in a transfer request it was public knowledge that Chelsea was going to buy him and everyone knew we'd get a **** lad of money so Newcastle played hard ball. Fair play to them but also fair play to us, we had a clear strategy of Carroll + 15m so whether or not the deal happened completely depended on what Chelsea was willing to pay and how far Newcastle was willing to push.

If the rumor is true that Spurs offered 28m then that would have been the bottom price for Newcastle so we were never going to get him cheap.

I don't know who else we could have bought with just a couple of days to go in the transfer window or who else would have wanted to come that was better than him and Carroll fitted nicely into our transfer policy to buy young British talent so really it's irrelevant who else we 'could have got' for 35m.

I doubt we could have got anyone else at that moment in time and this forum would have gone mental if we'd sold Torres and not bought Carroll or anyone else and our new American owners seemed to have pocketed 35m in their first transfer window.

So stop moaning about the price and get behind the lad.

As I said before, not every new signing can hit the ground running like Suarez. He's a classy and proven international and Carroll is still at the beginning of his career.

Granted some wouldn't but in my opinion we could have got some cracking strikers for that sort of money. Llorente would have been good (just off the top of my head).

and would Llorente be better than Carroll?

Obviously we can't know, but I'd guess at yes. If we hadn't bought him and he'd spent the time on newcastles treatment table rather than ours, and then not looked particularly impressive in the first two games, not a single person on this site would even mention him in the same bracket. imo of course.

Still, we could all still be (hypothetically) wrong.

fair enough, but its only guessing. Why don't people cut Carroll some slack and judge him properly after a season. That isn't saying don't question him but not be so quick to judge on half a dozen games. Some people are forming such drastic opinions and stances that they're backing themselves into corners which they'll rarely want to retreat from for fear of loss of face. There's a decent chance we'll have a beast of a forward on our hands. He'll always look clumsy and will never be as fast as Usain Bolt and will never have the footwork of suarez, the sooner people accept this, the easier it'll be to move on.

the main problem I see is in his head. Is he dedicated enough to make it work. I have no doubts regarding his attributes at all.
