My accountant mate (a Red) reckons it's a £4.1m loss as far as the books are concerned. Said something about how we spread the fee over the length of the contract, and that we've already written off 2.5 years and sold him for £15m. Doesn't sound so bad does it
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

Doesn't matter how you dress it up, it's a 23 million pound loss.

As a chartered accountant, I can tell you categorically that it does matter how you dress it up, and it's not a £23m loss. Basically, we bought him for £35m on a 5.5yr contract, so amortising his contract value over the 66 months gives a p&l hit of £530k per month, or £6,363,000 per year. We signed him on 31 Jan 2011, so have owned him for 28 months. His amortised value is therefore £35m less £14.8m , so £20.2m. At £15m (which the BBC are saying) we will take a £5m hit to the p&l when we sell.

I'll agree, though, that it sure feels like a £20m loss.

Selling Carroll will be a huge relief, huge flop and an average footballer. And it was a massive loss in terms of value for money. We could have got someone world class for that money, even two quality players that could have helped us get to the champs league etc.

We'll never know the money lost but **** it just sell the carthorse and use it wisely this time around.

From bbc: West Ham agree £15m Carroll fee: West Ham have agreed a fee with Liverpool for Andy Carroll but the England striker has yet to decide if he wants to join the Hammers permanently.
The London side will match Liverpool's asking price of around £15m, but the 24-year-old is unsure about the move ahead of a World Cup year.
It is understood interest from former club Newcastle United has cooled.
West Ham are expected to bid for Vitesse Arnhem's Wilfried Bony if Carroll rejects their approach.
The 24-year-old Ivory Coast international finished as 31-goal top scorer in the Dutch league this season, but West Ham manager Sam Allardyce has made no secret about Carroll being his main summer target. Sent from my iPhone using no App

Was it not very well documented that the deal was paid in full upfront, the same way the Torres deal went through?

That doesn't change the way accountants calculate depreciation.

Does the quoted 15m include the loan already paid, i.e. 1.5m? If so, the best we'll get is 13.5m or, as Sky are probably quoting, around 12m.

Its still 5m more than he's worth but what a load of cobblers.

                              I really hope so.

I'm always one to give a player time, even if they've not done well straight away, but I just couldn't ever see AC fitting in at Liverpool. That was compounded when BR came in with his philosophy.

It seems like that if the reports are true and we have agreed to sell him, we've more than got away lightly.

                                15m !!!!

                                Take it !!

I'd even give them back their hand after we'd bitten it off.
