it's incredibly common (to the point of it being pretty much only the really thick people that this doesn't apply to) for portuguese speakers to speak spanish and vice versa. if you're a native speaker of one, i think understanding the other might not even require any sort of lessons.

Portuguese people can understand Spanish, it's more difficult the other way around. Spanish is relatively simple and easy to learn.
