Rangers have been dealt a major blow with the news captain Steven Davis and goalkeeper Allan McGregor are the latest players to reject having their contracts transferred to Charles Green's newco club.

The duo join a host of Gers stars in refusing to agree to the transfer, with Kyle Lafferty and Jamie Ness having made the same decision earlier on Tuesday.

Lawyers Bridge Litigation confirmed the stance of the quartet on Tuesday evening.

Steven Naismith, Steven Whittaker, Sone Aluko and Rhys McCabe registered their objections before the start of this week.

A statement from lawyer Margaret Gribbon of Bridge Litigation read: "Allan McGregor, Steven Davis, Jamie Ness and Kyle Lafferty have instructed PFA lawyers' Bridge Litigation UK to object to their transfer to the Rangers' newco."

Lee Wallace earlier pledged his future to the newco club, which is almost certain to start life outside the SPL.

But Wallace and Lee McCulloch are the only two players to have committed themselves publicly to staying at Ibrox and Green now faces the prospect of more players walking away, possibly without compensation.

The law firm's statement added: "The union's lawyers are already instructed in this matter for Rhys McCabe and Sone Aluko.

"Bridge Litigation UK has confirmed that letters of objection have been sent to the club along with requests to the SFA to release the players' registrations.

"Bridge Litigation UK have shared with the players the contents of legal guidance issued by the SFA last week on the issue of TUPE and player registration and which they state supports their legal view that an objection under TUPE amounts to a lawful termination of contract giving the club no entitlement to a claim for compensation."

Ms Gribbon added: "This has been an extremely difficult period for all the players and in the end their decisions were influenced largely by footballing considerations.

"SPL football appears highly unlikely and even First Division football cannot be guaranteed in light of comments made today by two First Division clubs.

"The players' commitment and loyalty to oldco Rangers cannot be questioned; they voluntarily took significant wage cuts in a genuine act of solidarity which ensured that none of the playing squad or club staff would lose their jobs.

"But for their contribution, it's likely that the club would not have survived until the end of the season.

"As professional footballers, the players' careers are relatively short lived and they are entitled to exercise basic employment rights the law affords to all employees in this country under the TUPE Regulations.

"I now expect the SFA and FIFA to interpret their rules and regulations in accordance with the TUPE legislation so that the players' registrations can be released without delay."

The news strikes a big blow to the financially-stricken club, with Davis and McGregor both talismanic figures at Ibrox.

Long-serving custodian McGregor has been on the books at the Glasgow club since 2001 after coming through the youth ranks.

Skipper Davis, who has been a key player since arriving from Fulham in 2008, has been linked with a move south of the border to Premier League new-boys Southampton.

Rangers newco to begin pre-season training with only three players


Rangers will begin pre-season training on Thursday with only three senior players having committed to Charles Green's newco and others advised not to accept this month's wages should they wish to leave Ibrox as free agents.

The chaos surrounding the stricken club will be reflected at Murray Park, where PFA Scotland representatives will be present to ensure the newco company honours players' contracts. Lee McCulloch, Lee Wallace and Kyle Hutton are the only senior professionals to agree for their contracts to be transferred from the 'old' Rangers to Green's company, so far.

Eight players have refused the switch and claim to be free agents, although that figure is likely to rise by the time the manager, Ally McCoist, conducts training. The eight – the captain Steven Davis, Allan McGregor, Kyle Lafferty, Jamie Ness, Steven Naismith, Steven Whittaker, Sone Aluko and Rhys McCabe – were accused of "opportunism" by Green on Wednesday. The Rangers legend Sandy Jardine, who remains involved with the club, claimed greed was the motivating factor and that players had reneged on last season's agreement to take a 75% wage cut in exchange for reduced transfer fees this summer.

He said: "There was an agreement reached over wage cuts and they got a great deal because they could leave for rock bottom prices and now they have seen an opportunity. In many ways it's greed. If we don't have money from fees for players leaving – which we are completely entitled to – then what are we supposed to build on: fresh air?"

PFA Scotland, however, maintains players are legally entitled to walk away under Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) regulations and will oppose any challenge from Green. The organisation's chief executive, Fraser Wishart, has cited newco Rangers' anticipated exclusion from the Scottish Premier League, "added to the three-year ban from European competitions, the uncertainty over which league they will play in and what further sanctions the football authorities may impose" as mitigating factors.

Rangers' staff are due to receive their monthly salary on Thursday and players have been advised that to accept the money from Green's Sevco company would amount to an intention to transfer. The former Sheffield United chief executive, who has yet to provide the Scottish Football Association with full details of his consortium, has reiterated his intention to pursue players – and any clubs they join on a free transfer – for damages.

"I'm very, very disappointed of course," said Green on the rush for the Ibrox exits. "Particularly so late in the proceedings. It is clear in the regulations, if someone has an objection they have to notify within 24 hours, this is nearly two weeks. I think this is just opportunism. We will definitely challenge it, yes."

Possible they won't start again at all.The league is what,6 weeks away,and they still don't know how many players they have or where they will be playing .A lot depends how many players transfer over. As Green said himself those that don't are denying the club a transfer fee and without transfer fees they have no money to build the new club.

The SFA seem convinced that Rangers pulling power will be the same as old but they don't have the money,they don't have the league position and they don't have a lot of the players that made them a force.Whose to say they'll even win promotion from the 1st division even if they got put there.

The big issue for them is the season tickets sales which so far has been in the hundreds, there is no incoming revenue and their first big payroll is on 4th July - Those players and staff that have said will have seen their contracts revert back to 100%.

Club Statement: Reconstruction Proposal

The Club has received a set of papers in advance of the SFL meeting on Tuesday. The essential intent behind those papers is to induce the SFL clubs to agree a proposal to allow a Newco to enter the SFL in the 1st Division in exchange for a range of structural changes to the current set up and some small financial inducements. Some of the proposed changes have merit in principle.

The Board believe that any proposals for change should not be rushed, as these have been. They also have to be done by consensus and not through threat or inducement, again, as these have been.

The papers include a proposal to allow a Newco to enter the 1st Division. This is contrary to the rules of the SFL and nothing within the papers justifies this proposal.

As a club owned by its supporters and recovering from having been on the brink of extinction, the Board of Clyde Football Club recognise the damage done to the credibility of Rangers Football Club by its successive owners, and the subsequent impact on staff and supporters. These proposals do nothing to restore that credibility.

It is not for us to become involved in punishment, that is a matter for the SPL and SFA. The SFL clubs are being asked to change their rules so that the SPL and SFA can apply sanctions that fit short term financial interests.

It is not for us to tell any club what they should want for themselves, but to enter anywhere other than the 3rd Division risks Rangers Football Club being burdened with the legacy of commencing its rebuilding in a manner that they later look back on with regret. Rangers Football Club does not need to be handed a competitive advantage, they are more than capable of returning to the SPL via the 3rd Division on their own merit. Rebuilding from the bottom can restore the dignity stripped from the club by its former owners.

The papers use emotive language to threaten a future of financial meltdown and they carry the implication of the destruction of the game should a Newco not be entered in the 1st Division. If things are as bad as indicated then Scottish Football is in a far worse state than is being acknowledged. In which case it is time to accept the bankrupt model needs fixed and not supported and perpetuated on the back of this proposal. The fact that other clubs might face similar financial distress because Rangers Football Club enter the 3rd Division is hardly a reason to compromise the integrity of the SFL and further compromise Rangers Football Club.

Rather than attempting to prepare a soft landing before delivering sanctions, it would be better to contemplate more radical change that might actually underpin financial stability in the long term for clubs that balance their books. Perhaps an amnesty from sanctions for clubs that are forced to face insolvency procedures in the next 2 years as a result of the current turmoil, and an automatic entry to the 3rd Division for any club liquidated and reformed in similar circumstances. This would allow 2 years to properly restructure the Scottish Game for the benefit of all and undo the damage that has been created by the current structure which encourages club directors to trade integrity for cash, and then spend beyond their means, willingly risking the very existence of football clubs. If we could believe that the game could be less self interested long enough to resolve this, then this, and other far better ideas, might be worth contemplating.

SPL clubs that have openly stated their opposition to a Newco being given immediate access to the SPL have taken the position based on their, and at times, their supporters' view of what is the right thing to do, however, the vote has still to be taken and proposals such as these are premature. If the SPL clubs vote as indicated on the basis of the increasingly discredited notion of sporting integrity, it would be questionable if the SFL clubs did otherwise.

The reality is that we are faced with unique circumstances and it would be foolish to pretend otherwise, that probably means that compromise for some is inevitable, and perhaps even worthwhile for everyone in the long term. The solution however is not this hastily cobbled together proposal.

The Board of this club sees no merit whatsoever in adopting this proposal.
